Captain Richard Brydges Beechey RHA (1808-1895) Extensive River Valley with Figures Oil on card, 25 x 35.5cm (9¾ x 14) Signed with monogram 'RB' conjoined Born in 1808 in London, Richard Brydges Beechey, the son of Sir William Beechey RA, entered the Navy in 1822, retired as a Captain in 1864 and became a Vice-Admiral in 1879. Throughout his naval career he painted many accomplished marine works and exhibited numerous paintings at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and at the Society of British Artists. Strickland notes that Beechey was employed on the survey work at the mouth of the Shannon and the west coast of Ireland, during which time he sent works to the Royal Hibernian Academy, becoming an honorary member in 1868. After his retirement from the Navy in 1864 he settled in Ireland, living for many years at Monkstown, and later in Pembroke Road, Dublin. While landscapes are not unknown, it is for his marine work that Beechey is best remembered. His many years as a sailor and his understanding of the vagaries of the sea underpins all his work and is evident in the present work which depicts sailing boats beating towards the coast in rough seas.

Rear Admiral Richard Brydges Beechey HRHA (1808-1895) South Stack Lighthouse Holyhead (1872)

      Est: €15,000 - €25,000

Rear Admiral Richard Brydges Beechey HRHA (1808-1895) South Stack Lighthouse Holyhead (1872) oil on canvas signed 'Beechey 1872' lower right and titled verso h:92  w:137.30 cm. Provenance: Gorry Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection Exhibited: Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin 1872, no.41; Royal Academy, London 1872, no.1039; Gorry Gallery, Dublin 1st-19th November 2021, no.15 With his customary penchant for stormy sea scenes, Beechey has depicted the South Stack Lighthouse, illuminated by winter sunlight, and silhouetted against dark scudding rainclouds. Seagulls hover over white-capped waves, while a line of cormorants take flight, heading towards the rocky shore. To the right of the lighthouse, a suspension bridge connects South Stack to Holy Island (Holyhead). Tiny figures are visible on the suspension bridge, watching the progress of a three-masted barque, that struggles against wind and tide, endeavouring to steer clear of the rocky coastline. Visible on the mountain side is a nineteenth century castellated structure; above that can be seen roads and walls, and beyond that again, the dark mountain top, shrouded in white clouds. Waves crash against the cliffs, and a section of ship's mast floats in the foreground. The South Stack lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1809, as a result of reports compiled by Capt. Hugh Evans, and is located on a small island to the west of Holy Island in Anglesea. The elegant suspension bridge depicted in Beechey's painting was constructed in 1828, but has since been replaced by a new bridge. Beechey's painting includes cormorants and gulls, and the area is today still famous for its birdlife. Born in London in 1808, Richard Brydges Beechey was a naval officer who became one of Ireland's most accomplished marine painters. After training at the Royal Naval College in Portsmouth, he was stationed in the West Indies and in 1825 joined HMS Blossom, serving in the Pacific under his older brother, the hydrographer Frederick William Beechey. During this time Beechey landed on Pitcairn Island, where he sketched John Adams, the last surviving mutineer from HMS Bounty. His 1834 painting H. M. Fisgard Weathering the Rocks off Ushant, exhibited at the Gorry Gallery in 2010, depicts a naval vessel in heavy seas, with rocks and a headland in the distance. In 1835 Beechey was transferred to the Admiralty Survey of Ireland, and his surveying of Lough Erne, along with Lieut. James Woolfe, marked the beginning of years of creating detailed charts of the coast and rivers of Ireland. Throughout these years, he painted consistently, exhibiting both at the Royal Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy. Promoted in 1840 to the rank of Commander, he continued to paint, many of his canvases depicting Irish scenes. At the British Institution in 1858, he showed Hooker, off Cork Harbour. He first exhibited at the RHA in 1842, where he showed three works, including The Total Loss of the "Intrinsic" of Liverpool in 1836, but did not show at the Academy in Dublin again until 1861. After retiring from the Navy in 1864, with the rank of Admiral, Beechey settled for a time at Monkstown, Co. Dublin, and four years later was elected HRHA. He later moved back to England, where he continued to paint Irish maritime scenes. There are works by Beechey in collections in Ireland and abroad. His Mail Boat "Connaught" is in the National Gallery of Ireland, while a view of the Blasket Islands is in the Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, along with a panoramic view of Kingstown Harbour. Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Richard Brydges Beechey HRHA (1808-1895) The Approaching Storm (1864) oil on canvas signed lower left and dated 1864 h:62  w:90.10 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Signed and dated 1860, and depicting a large gaff-rigged yacht of perhaps forty tons, struggling in rough seas off a desolate coast, this is a classic Beechey maritime scene, one fraught with danger. On the rocky shore, a line of timber ribs, the remains of a wrecked ship, serves as a reminder of the dangers of these stormy and inhospitable waters. Attempting to tack in heavy seas, a yacht has lost headway and is drifting aft. The boom has swung across the deck so that the mainsail is ineffective, pressing against the topping lift. Two crew members struggle in vain to swing the boom to windward, so as to catch the wind and regain headway. However the wind is pushing the yacht inexorably backwards. Forward along the deck, a third crew member pushes at the leech of the foresail with a gaff hook, in a vain attempt to also bring it out so as to catch the wind. In nautical parlance, the vessel is caught 'in irons'. To regain headway, it would have to rotate towards shore, a hazardous manoeuvre. Having completed the turn successfully, three other yachts are heading into the distance. Over the course of his career, Beechey exhibited several paintings of yachts racing, including his 1875 Entrance to Cork Harbour which was shown at the RHA, followed by, three years later, The Rivals, at the Entrance of Cork Harbour. This latter is probably the same painting now in the Royal St. George Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire, titled Yacht Racing in Cork Harbour. During this time Beechey landed on Pitcairn Island, where he sketched John Adams, last surviving mutineer from HMS Bounty. After retiring from the Navy in 1864, with the rank of Admiral, Beechey settled for a time at Monkstown, Co. Dublin and four years later was elected HRHA. In 1874, he was living at 110 Pembroke Road, and in that year painted Eagle Island, off Erris Head, West of Ireland, a work exhibited a decade later at the Royal Hibernian Academy. [Exh. Gorry Gallery 2003] By 1885, he was living at Plymouth, where he continued painting. Another late work, Bringing Home the Turf, County Kerry was shown in the Gorry Gallery in 2005. There are works by Beechey in collections in Ireland and abroad. His Mail Boat "Connaught" is in the National Gallery of Ireland, while a view of the Blasket Islands is in the Royal St. George Yacht Club, along with a panoramic view of Kingstown Harbour. Fastnet Rock, and Lights, off Cape Clear, shown at the RHA in 1877, is now in the collection of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, while HMS Erebus passing through the chain of bergs (1842) is in the Maritime Museum in Greenwich. CAPTAIN RICHARD BRYDGES BEECHEY RHA (1808-1895)Irish River Landscape with waterfall, Possibly Co. Kerry Oil on canvas, 60 x 91cmSigned and dated 1888Born in 1808 in London, the son of Sir William Beechey RA, Richard entered the Navy in 1822, retired as a Captain in 1864 and became a Vice-Admiral in 1879. The present work is of an, as yet, unidentified view, quite possibly in Kerry where the artist holidayed and painted, submitting a number of Kerry views such as Upper Lake, Killarney (1873), Magillicuddy’s Reeks (1876), The Great Skellig (1883) for exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. The artist’s depiction of such a beauty spot in Ireland is treated in a typical fashion for the mid-19th century, with the contrasting uses of the lake being observed - on the left is a group of women and children washing clothes, while to the right of the composition is a small group of gentlemen fishermen in a rowing boat, with another fisherman beyond on the lake’s shore. The lake is seen below a cascading falls from which emanates a hazy curtain of spray. The dramatic landscape is held together by the inclusion of a road bridge just above the top of the falls and a horse and cart add scale and interest. While Beechey is rightly famed for his marine pictures, it is fair to say that his handling of the landscape, the composition and atmosphere is well beyond the level usually ascribed to an ‘amateur’ artist.

Oil on Canvas Signed and dated 1872 lower right 79 x 112 cm. (31 1/8 x 44 in) Exhibited: Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts, 1872, no.41 Constructed in 1828, the iron suspension bridge seen in Beechey's painting replaced the traditional method of crossing the channel, which was said to have been by a basket that was suspended on a hemp cable. Holyhead, located on Holy Island, is a major sea port serving Ireland, with people having sailed between Holyhead and Ireland for possibly over 4000 years. The maritime importance of Holyhead reached its zenith in the 19th century with the construction of a 3km long sea breakwater, the longest in the UK, and was constructed in order to provide a safe harbour for vessels caught in stormy waters on their way to industrial ports such as Liverpool and Lancashire. The peripheral islands surrounding Holy Island, including the North Stack, the South Stack (depicted in the present painting), and their cliffs and jagged rocks were a great danger to sailors, even after the construction of the South Stack Lighthouse. The looming darkness and imposing cliffs in the present painting suggest a tense atmosphere, and the isolation of the sailing boats in the lower right evidently adds a sense of perspective allowing one to appreciate the scale of cliffs.

      Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1872 lower right 77 x 111 cm. (30 1/4 x 43 3/4 in) Established following the Norman invasion in the 12th century, Dingle was to become one of the main trading ports in Ireland, with a profitable trade of exporting fish and hides, and importing continental wines. As a fishing port, Dingle s fishing trade dates back to the early part of the 19th century, and it was a regular sight for herring trawlers, and nobby fleets in search of mackerel. The Dingle Peninsula, arguably the westernmost point of Europe, has been the sight of numerous wrecks, some of which occured in recent times, including the Spanish ship MV Ranga that was wrecked on its maiden voyage in 1982. The present painting by Beechey gives an insight into the dramatic views near Dingle, and illustrates the unforgiving nature of the rugged and exposed coastline. Rear-Admiral Richard Brydges Beechey was an Anglo-Irish painter in the Royal Navy, which he joined aged only 14. Beechey was one of the 18 children of the painter Sir William Beechey (17531839), and after his time at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, he sailed the Pacific in HMS Blossom, which was commanded by his brother Frederick William Beechey (1796-1856), in an effort to support the Franklin Expedition. In 1828 Beechey was promoted to lieutenant, but it wasn t until 1851 that he was promoted to Captain. In the interim Beechey became a prolific painter, and often the subjects and views that he experienced in the Royal Navy became the catalyst for his paintings. He first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts in 1842, while he was living in Limerick, and he continued to exhibit up to the year before his death in 1895 showing over 50 paintings in total.

Inscribed with title on the stretcher verso Provenance: Richard Green Gallery, London (original label verso) Exhibited: RHA Annual Exhibition 1873 Cat. No.158 costing 63.0.0 Admiral Richard Brydges Beechey was the third son of the noted portrait painter Sir William Beechey (1753-1839). The foremost marine painter of his day, Beechey began his life by following his brother into the navy in 1821. His career saw services all over the globe, much of which is recorded in sketches and oils. However in 1831 he was invalided out of the navy and into the survey of Ireland for the next thirty years. His name is listed as the responsible officer on many of the charts of the Irish coastline. During this period Beechey was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy and whilst the majority of his works have a maritime flavour, the present work entitled A View of the Upper Lake, Killarney, taken near the tunnel was exhibited in 1873 (Cat. No. 158). The painting was executed in 1865; therefore we must presume that in the interim it had remained in the artist's possession; perhaps a happy memory of a holiday in the area, as it was one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland in the 19th century. Of course tourists had been coming to Killarney since the 18th century, but in the 19th century a rash of popular guide books including: Mr & Mrs Hall's Tour of Ireland published in 1841 helped the explosion of visitor numbers. The visit of Queen Victoria in 1861 gave the royal seal of approval, and further fuelled the tourist boom to the area. This view of the Upper Lake is taken from a much described vantage point looking down toward Ronayne's Island. It depicts an exceptionally active day on the lake, with boating parties coming and going. A carriage in the tunnel illustrates the popular jaunting routes and the entire is watched on by two relaxed gentlemen fishermen. Throughout his career in the navy and survey Beechey sketched from life and the accuracy and detail are a wonderful snapshot of what looks like an idyllic day in Killarney.
