CORNELIS BEELT, COASTAL LANDSCAPE OF SCHEVENINGEN, oil on panel, 72 x 107 cm

      Est: €16,000 - €18,000

Characteristic for the works of the Haarlem painter Cornelis Beelt are the generously scaled beach scenes with their varying and abundantly painted staffage. Their colourful costumes provide the contrast to the sand painted in ochre tones. The dark horse carriage is a motif often used by him. It also appears in a painting very similar to ours, formerly in the Gallert' Matthiesen in Berlin (photo RKD). Cornelis Beelt was born much earlier than previously thought. Today the date of his birth is still given as 1640. Evidence for the new date is found in the inventory catalogue of the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem for which Irene van Thiel Stromann contributed the biographies. She believes the date of birth to be 1610/15 after having found documents of Beelt's marriage in Haarlem on 30 March 1630. In 1661 he became a member of the St. Luke´s Guild in Haarlem. His date of death is also uncertain, and is best to determine this by the late oeuvre and therefore should be given as being between 1664 and 1684 (Dr. Gerlinde de Beer).

      Est: £40,000 - £60,000

THE PROPERTY OF A LADY CORNELIS BEELT ROTTERDAM 1640 - 1702 HAARLEM OR ROTTERDAM SKATERS ON A FROZEN LAKE AT THE EDGE OF A TOWN bears signature and date lower centre right on a plank of wood: J. V Ostade f. 1653 oil on canvas PROVENANCE Comte Alfred de Balathier-Conigham, Château d'Ambronay, l'Ain, around 1870 ; Thence by inheritance to his son-in-law, Comte Louis Bernard de Lauzière; Thence by inheritance to his son-in-law, Comte François Carra de Vaux Saint-Cyr (1893-1972), who sold Château d'Ambronay to the Ambronay Town Council around 1960 and bought the Château de Saint-Béron in Savoy; Thence by descent to the present owner. CATALOGUE NOTE It has been suggested that the town in the distance is that of Kampen, the view taken from the far side of the river Ijssel. The south-eastern corner of the city wall can be made out on the left and, to its right, the gothic Bovenkerk, dedicated to St. Nicholas, dominates the skyline. Beelt may simply have extended the scope of the Ijssel in the interest of composition. The horse-drawn carriage moving across the ice towards the lower left of the composition is a motif often found in Beelt's oeuvre (see, for example, the signed Winter landscape reproduced in W. Bernt, The Netherlandish Painters of the 17th Century, Munich 1969, vol. I, fig. 68). A winter landscape of similar composition, but on a far smaller scale was sold in these Rooms, 9 July 1998, lot 204.

PROVENANCE With Alfred Brod, London, December 1965. With Gebr. Douwes, Amsterdam, February 1968, acquired by Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. A-30). LITERATURE H.-U. Beck, Knstler um Jan van Goyen, Doornspijk, 1991, p. 31, no. 27. NOTES Known primarily as a painter of beach scenes comparable to the present picture, Beelt was a native of Haarlem whose work was strongly influenced by that of Willem Kool. His beaches are generally populated with numerous figures and frequently depict either, and sometimes both, a fish-seller and a horse and rider, for example the picture in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (inv. no. 1871).
