          Brigid Berlin

          Est: $3,000 - $5,000

American, 1939-2020 Bad Lay Signed with initials BB (lr) Needlepoint pillow 15 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches (40 x 31.8 cm) Exhibited: Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, New York, Brigid Berlin: Needlepoint, October 21 - November 2008 Before the year 2000, Brigid Berlin was known for her outrageous stage shows, Tit Prints, Cock Books and long association with Andy Warhol. After 2000, Berlin began creating needlepoints of crime scenes and Post covers which juxtapose news photographs with wordplay on a daily basis. This piece was included in a gallery show of Brigid Berlin's artwork in 2008 and the gallery materials state: "It is not uncharacteristic that Berlin in later years has turned to the traditionally ladylike craft of needlepoint to create work that continues to challenge the social status quo, defy convention, and pose questions about taste and society ... The meticulously executed needlepoint pieces transform the daily ghastliness of news occurrences and media spin into demure domestic objects of quaint design and questionable comfort. News products designed for a momentary frisson of engagement are rendered into soft edged but durable monuments that outlive the typical transitory lifespan expected of such unpalatable printed exclamations."

BRIGID BERLIN Sixty-Four One Dollar Bills.

          Est: $500 - $800

BRIGID BERLIN Sixty-Four One Dollar Bills. An original work presented in two frames, 2012, each presenting full sheets of 32 $1 bills, each 21 x 24 inches (53.5 x 60 cm), inscribed on the back of one frame "For Rob/"A to B and Back Again"/Love BB 6-6-12." Visually fine, not removed from frames. Interesting original artwork made by Brigid Berlin and gifted to her close friend Rob Vaczy in 2012. The dollar bill artwork is reminiscent of 200 One Dollar Bills and other currency themed works by her great friend Andy Warhol. Brigid and Andy are the "A to B" referenced in the inscription here, also part of the title of Warhol's 1975 book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again). BRIGID BERLIN Six original painted "Tit Knockers."

          Est: $1,000 - $1,500

BRIGID BERLIN Six original painted "Tit Knockers." Six wooden drawer pulls each with a varicolored impression from Berlin's breast, four initialed and dated "BB '95" on the bottom, these titled by Berlin as "Tit Knockers." Each about 1 3/4 inches diameter (4.5 cm) and with a mounting screw into the bottom. Fine. An unsual application of Brigid Berlin's most famous artistic self portrait, the "Tit Print," here presented on a group of six drawer pulls. Berlin playfully called these "Tit Knockers." Berlin was known to impress her ink or paint covered breasts onto sheets and the pages of books (a portfolio of 10 "Tit Prints" was assembled in 1970), but we have not located another example of this form of art with such a useful household application! Est: $3,000 - $5,000

BRIGID BERLIN or ANDY WARHOL, attributed to Three self-portrait Polaroid photographs. New York: circa 1978. Three Polaroid photographs, each a bust length portrait of Brigid Berlin with bare shoulders, each with the code "H714354" printed on the verso, each 4 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches (11 x 9 cm). Well preserved and dark. Three striking Polaroids of Brigid Berlin. These photographs may also be attributable to Andy Warhol himself, as we trace a trio of signed Polaroids of the German art collector Erich Marx with the same coding to the verso (sold Grisebach 3 December 2021, lot 771) and a Polaroid study of bananas with the same code in the database of collections of the Five Colleges and Historic Deerfield Museum Consortium. BRIGID BERLIN Good Knot.

          Est: $3,000 - $5,000

BRIGID BERLIN Good Knot. An original needlepoint pillow after the New York Post cover of 31 December 2006, signed in the needlepoint with initials "BB" at lower right, overall 16 x 13 x 3 inches (41 x 33 x 8 cm). Fine. A darkly comic original needlepoint by Brigid Berlin, presenting the New York Post cover of 31 December 2006 as a work of art. Before the year 2000, Brigid Berlin was known for her outrageous stage shows, Tit Prints, Cock Books and long association with Andy Warhol. After 2000, Berlin began creating needlepoints of crime scenes and Post covers which juxtapose news photographs with wordplay on a daily basis. This particular pillow is perhaps the most macabre of the series. It depicts three black-hooded hangmen placing a noose around the neck of Saddam Hussein minutes before his execution following the trial in which he was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. Exhibited: John McWhinnie at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, October 2008. For the quote above see: https://glennhorowitz.com/events/brigid-berlin-needlepoint/ C Estate of Brigid Berlin

        • BRIGID BERLIN Two signed Polaroid self portraits.
          Apr. 27, 2022

BRIGID BERLIN Two signed Polaroid self portraits.

          Est: $800 - $1,200

BRIGID BERLIN Two signed Polaroid self portraits. Two vintage color Polaroids, likely late 1960s, the first depicting Berlin nude from the waist up, the second a close up self portrait, both signed or inscribed by Berlin on the card backing (see note), each 4 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches (11 x 9 cm). Some scratches to surface. Two late 1960s Polaroids, the nude inscribed in the period "For Ted [Berrigan]/Nude after Woolworths/Love Brig" and the close up portrait signed "Brigid Berlin " in black ink. Berlin was an early user of Polaroid cameras and is credited with introducing the medium to Andy Warhol. There is an obvious comparison of these early self portraits to the modern "selfie." Est: $1,200 - $1,800

[Brigid Berlin's Inscribed Copy] Andy Warhol & Bob Colacello. Andy Warhol's Exposures. New York: Andy Warhol/Grosset & Dunlap, [1979]. Stated first printing, the half title signed in full "Andy Warhol" and with a drawing of a heart initialed "A.W.", further signed by Warhol across the dust jacket, and with an inscription gifting the book "For Irene [Politis]/with much love./Brigid 3/8/80." Publisher's black cloth stamped in silver, in original dust jacket with Warhol's signature in ink. 11 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches (29 x 24 cm); illustrated with photographs after Warhol, [255 pp.]. Short closed tear to upper jacket panel, chip to head of spine and few others to extremities; Together with a Brigid Berlin signed reproduction photo-collage, the subject dozens of phalluses (of her artist friends?), 10 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches, signed "Brigid Berlin 96", the image repeated on the verso, fine; A floral watercolor by Brigid Berlin, with inscription to Irene [Politis] dated 1982, 9 x 8 1/2 inches; And various ephemera including a typescript titled "The BB Tapes." The ephemera including items related to the death of Berlin's father Richard Berlin (President of Hearst Corporation); cards to Warhol's memorial mass, 1988; a few other items; and the typescript titled "The BB Tapes" on a cover sheet, 32 pp., dated at the end 11 October 1988, the text offering a brief biography of Berlin's upbringing and first encounters with Andy Warhol, her hiring at the Factory in 1976, descriptions of Berlin's art, books, and exhaustive tape recordings, and transcriptions of taped conversations with John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Truman Capote, etc. Minor signs of handling. BRIGID BERLIN'S TWICE SIGNED COPY OF WARHOL'S EXPOSURES WITH DRAWING AND EPHEMERA. Berlin's copy of Warhol's classic, signed twice and with a large heart drawing, accompanied by two signed artworks by Berlin and an interesting typescript history of the Factory years. Brigid Berlin is pictured twice and mentioned four times in Exposures including a story where Warhol sent Berlin to the East Hampton funeral of Big Edie Beale. In the chapter in Exposures discussing Truman Capote, Warhol describes the excessive alcohol consumption at the Factory: "The vodka disappears. First the Russian then the Polish ... Brigid made scallops one day in white wine and went on a binge for a week. Thanks to Truman we have AA meetings in the office now" ( Exposures, p. 145). This is echoed in the typescript of "The BB Tapes" where both Berlin's and Capote's struggles with drinking are described. As for the artwork in this lot, the most unmistakably Brigid Berlin piece is the signed collage of men's penises, reminiscent of the Cock Book prepared by Berlin, as she states in "The BB Tapes": "I was busy during the late '60's and early '70's with my cock book -- a thick, leatherbound book that all the artists I knew made drawings in. This was followed by the tit book." The present lot is a fine assortment of items that offers examples of, and explanations for, Berlin's important contribution to the New York scene, with her personally inscribed copy of the book that chronicled the era as it came to a close in 1979 through the lens of its maestro, Andy Warhol.
