Giovanni Bernardi da Castelbolognese (?) (1496-1553) Ludovico Ariosto, oval bronze plaquette, 79mm. x 60.5mm., a very fine old cast, brown patina, pierced at top, number 1253 in relief on reverse Obverse: bust in profile to the left of Lodovico Ariosto, with beard, wearing open shirt and gown, L-A across field Reverse: blank except for number 1253 in relief The portrait is known with a variety of reverses, for example Venus crowned by Victory, and Mercury with Argos. One reverse, of Phaeton, is attributed to Giovanni Bernardi, but as the obverse seems to be married with different reverses at random, this does not help with identifying the artist of this portrait. The portrait is based on the frontispiece of the 1523 edition of Orlando furioso, and the number on the reverse seems to be an error for 1523. Giovanni Bernardi de Castelbolognese (1496-1553) The Resurrection, rectangular bronze-gilt plaquette, 107mm.x 82mm., grey-brown patina with traces of gilding, pierced in top corners Christ, raising his right hand and holding a banner in his left, stands on the tomb. Four sleeping soldiers lie slumped to left and below. The shield of the nearest soldier is inscribed S.P.Q.R. To right another two soldiers stand watching. A larger and finer silver-gilt version of this plaquette is mounted in a pax in the Victoria and Albert Museum (cat. P.77). There is a similar rock crystal by Bernardi, engraved for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, in Copenhagen (Kris 261) of which a bronze plaquette is known (Bange 1922, 862; Maclagan p. 69).

Giovanni Bernardi de Castelbolonese (1496-1553) Battle before a City Gate, oval bronze plaquette, 55mm. x 64mm., brown patina A group of horsemen issue from a city gate to the left and join in combat with horsemen and foot soldiers. On the far right a foot soldier carries a large rectangular shield on which is the artist's signature IO.B.F. A river god, holding a sceptre and an up-turned vase reclines in the left foreground. Another oval plaquette which derives from an engraved rock crystal. Vasari notes that a series of oval crystals was commissioned from Bernardi by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, including one depicting The Capture of Goletta. The famous Cofanetto Farnese, now in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, was made by the Florentine silversmith Manno di Mariano Sbarri, and indeed is decorated with six oval rock crystals by Bernardi, but they all depict mythological subjects. Bernardi was famous for his skill in engraving rock crystal. The stone, of which there is a plentiful supply in the Italian Alps, was only engraved in shallow relief, and was to be viewed from the back. It was very popular with Popes and Cardinals for decorating boxes, candlesticks, liturgical vessels etc. Many plaquettes were cast from these crystals. Giovanni Bernardi de Castelbolognese (1496-1553) A Bull Hunt, oval bronze plaquette, 68.5mm. x 87mm., brown patina A bull, standing facing to the left with his head lowered, is attacked by three dogs, two horsemen and two men on foot. The exergue is empty. The composition probably derives from an engraved rock crystal. Three dolphins swim in the waves in front. This 'handsome plaquette' (Ricci) was not identified by Molinier as by Bernardi, but the example in the Kress collection has a clear signature above the waves on the right The signature in not readable in this example.
