        JOSEF HARPE AND FRIEDRICH BERNHARD JOSEF HARPE (1887 - 1968) German general and a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords of Nazi Germany. Harpe served on the Eastern Front, where he commanded XXXXI Panzer Corps and the 9th Army, and later Army Group A, when he was relieved of his command due to the inability of German forces to stop the Soviet Vistula-Oder Offensive. He ended the war commanding the 5th Panzer Army. FRIEDRICH BERNHARD (1888 - 1945) German Cavalry Generalleutnant and Panzer commander during World War II, executed by a Soviet military tribunal for atrocities committed in the Bryansk area. Rare war-date D.S., 1p. 8vo., [in the field], Mar. 28, 1944, a signed evaluation of Oberst Friedrich Jurgen, Pz. Gren. Stab. zbV 18, whom it is indicated was awarded a Knight's Cross. Bernhard signs at the conclusion as the commander of Special Corps 532 in the 9th Army. Harpe signs beneath as Commander-in-Chief of the 9th Army with a typed endorsement, agreeing with Bernhard's assessment that Jurgen is suited to command a division. FRIEDRICH-WILHELM JURGEN (1895-1954) received the Knights Cross for his actions as the Commander of a Schtzen-Batallion within the Second Panzer Division, where he forced a crossing over the Maas River and distinguished himself in the capture of Fortress Boulogne. Исполнял многочисленные портреты по заказу европейских знатных семейств. В последние годы жизни был пенсионером дворца Нимфенбург. Светлейший князь Пётр Львович Витгенштейн (Peter Dominikus Ludwig, Fürst zu Sayn und Wittgenstein; 1831 — 1887) — глава рода Сайн – Витгенштейн - Сайн, генерал - лейтенант Русской императорской армии, участник Русско-турецкой войны. Один из богатейших помещиков России. Родился во Флоренции в семье князя Льва Витгенштейна и Стефании Радзивилл. Детство и юность провел за границей, много путешествуя с отцом и мачехой. С 1850 на службе в лейб-гвардейском Конном полку. В 1860 назначен флигель-адъютантом к императору Александру ІІ. С 1860 г. военный агент в Париже. С августа 1877 г. в действующей армии, награжден золотым оружием «за храбрость». Был влюблен во французскую актрису Розалию Леон (1832—1886), на которой в конце концов женился в 1880 г., спустя почти двадцать лет после знакомства. История их любви нашла отражение в нескольких книгах, которые выходят во Франции до сих пор. Провенанс: из наследия светлейшего князя Петра Витгенштейна.

        JOSEPH BERNHARDT (1805-1850: THEOBALD GRAF VON BUTLER HAIMHAUSEN; AND VICTORINE GRAF VON BUTLER HAIMHAUSEN Two oil on canvas, lined, Theobald inscribed 'Theobald Graf von Buttler Haimhausen/geboren den 19 Javer/803 gemale/von Jos Bernhardt/1838' on the reverse, Victorine inscribed 'Victorine Gräfin von Buttler Haimhausen/geborne/von Buedorfer geb-den 8th Decbr 1811/Jos Bernhardt pinx/1837' on the reverse. 50 x 37 1/2 in., 54 x 41 1/2 in. (frame). Note: In the background of this portrait of the Countess Victorine Gräfin von Buttler Haimhausen there stands a white building. This structure is the Schloss Haimhausen, a castle built in Bavaria in 1281. It was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and rebuilt in 1660 as an ornate Baroque home. Francois Cuvillies enlarged the castle in the mid-18th century, adding Rococo plaster work and painting decoration in the chapel, banquet hall, and state apartments. The manor was purchased in 1794 by Count Buttler of Haimhausen. He and the Countess had ten children and took up causes for the poor and under-privileged. The castle had several owners, one of them James Eduard Haniel, a brewer, who turned the garden into an English style park, which it remains to this day. By the 1930s the castle had become too expensive to maintain as a family home. It is now the home of the Bavarian International School.
