            Est: $20,000 - $30,000

BESSA, Pancreace (1772 - c. 1835). Still Life with Oranges, Pomegranates, Leaves, a Sprig of Mint and Orange Flowers. Original Gouache on vellum. Stretched on old board, with original Empire frame. Signed lower right: "P. Bessum". 10 3/16" x 14 7/8" sheet; 15 1/2" x 19 3/4" framed. In the Original Early 19th-Century Empire Frame. Provenance: inscribed on the back in chalk "Photo faite 131"; with the exhibition labels of Gallerie Charpentier, Paris "Les Fleurs et Les Fruits depuis le Romantisme 1942-1943; Lucien Goldschmidt, New York , ca 1950; Estate of Justine Auerbach, New York; with Doyle Wed, Jan 26, 2011, lot 83. Exhibited as part of "Les Fleurs et Les Fruits depuis le Romantisme" at Hotel Jean Charpentier when it was under the ownership of Raymond Nacenta. Jean Charpentier (1891-1976) established the gallery in Paris, the gallery was known as the Hotel Jean Charpentier or the Galerie. Raymond Nacenta purchased the gallery in 1941 and operated under the same name until 1961. Nacenta put on a seris of thematic exhibitions, including 100 portraits de femmes, Les célébrités françaises. In 1954, Nacenta began regular exhibitions of the l'Ecole de Paris, and the exhibition at which this still life was shown. Charpentier published Charles Leger's "Redoute et son Temps", 1945, in which this still life is illustrated. Later the painting was exhibited here in New York by Lucien Goldschmidt (1912-1992), in about 1950. "His life was divided between books and the world of art. Booksellers and art dealers normally lead rather separate careers, but Goldschmidt combined both, giving to each his own individual, highly independent, taste. Words and images combined to form an outlook on the world that was, in one word, civilised" (Nicholas barker, The Independent, January 3rd 1993). Bessa was one of the most talented and popular flower painters of his day, and an outstanding pupil both of Redoute and of Gerard von Spaendonck. His paintings were regularly shown in the Paris Salon, and he produced watercolors on vellum for the French royal collection of watercolors on vellum known as the "Velins du Roi." Bessa is perhaps best known, however, for his printed works. He produced exquisite stipple engravings from his own watercolors in a number of great botanical books. Dunthorne describes his "Etudes des Fleurs et de Fruits" as "among the most exquisite of all flower prints in their beauty and delicacy of execution." Bessa collaborated with Redoute on a number of works, both as painter and as master engraver, producing the stunning engravings for Redoute's "Roses."

BESSA WATERCOLOR, A BRANCH OF ORANGE BLOSSOM, WITH A BEE-EATER

            Est: $30,000 - $50,000

BESSA, Pancrace (French, 1772-1846). A branch of Orange Blossom, with a Bee-Eater. Watercolor. Signed and dated in pen and brown ink, lower left: "P. Bessa. Paris.1816". 16 1/2" x 12 1/2" visible, 18 1/4" x 14 1/4" framed. Condition: Paper laid down and wrapped around board. There is an area of discoloration in the upper left corner - possibly a repair. The sheet has discolored slightly. There are tiny indentation marks in a few places, caused by blunt instrument. There is a small area of abrasion in the lower right corner. Colors remain strong and vibrant. The eighteenth-century saw a burgeoning of interest in birds and exotic animals. Wealthy collectors began to build aviaries and menageries to house their unusual species. These imported species were often part of royal collections and could be found in the United Provinces at the palaces of the princes of Orange and France at Versailles. The expansion of trade and growing exploration of the world resulted in wild animals being captured and examined as both objects of curiosity and scientific pursuits. Artists were frequently employed to paint prized flora and fauna; among them was the painter Pancrace Bessa. He is primarily known for his botanical watercolors and many published illustrations and showed great facility in the representation of animals and birds. Born in Paris in 1772, Pancrace Bessa studied at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle with both Gerard von Spaendonck and Pierre Joseph Redouté. He is considered one of the most talented painters of his day and was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salons between 1806 and 1831. He is also known to have instructed the royal Duchesse de Berry in the art of painting and worked on the French royal collection of watercolors on vellum, known as the Velins du Roi, from 1823 - 1835.

Pancrace Bessa and others An album of 33 original watercolour drawings of flowers and plants by Pancrace Bessa, Ferdinand Bauer, Lucy Anderson Pelham, and others unsigned or unattributed, together with a small quantity of miscellaneous prints bound towards the end, oblong folio (323 x 480mm.), contemporary green morocco gilt by Simier (signed and with his ticket) with the crowned monogram of the Duchesse de Berry (Olivier 2554 fer 6), gilt edges, housed in a contemporary green fitted case with her arms FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE DUCHESSE DE BERRY, A FINELY-BOUND ALBUM OF WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS INCLUDING 11 ON VELLUM BY PANCRACE BESSA, 4 of which are of humming-birds. Bessa was one of the foremost botanical artists of his day, a pupil of Gerard van Spaendonck and a contemporary of Redouté. He was the Duchesse de Berry’s painting tutor. The album also contains three signed drawings by Austrian artist Ferdinand Bauer, and several others not signed but identifiably in the same hand. Bauer famously travelled with Matthew Flinders on his expedition to Australia. PROVENANCE: A note loosely inserted by a previous owner suggests that the album was presented to the Duchesse de Berry by the Principe de Polignac (probably Jules de Polignac), and that the Duchesse later gave it to Georgiana Heneage, the aunt of the note’s author Bid on Sotheby's
