        Nov. 13, 2022

        Quinquina Vouvray.

        Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: MAURICE BIAIS (ca. 1875-1926) SIZE: 47 3/4 x 63 in./121.3 x 160 cm PRINTER: Imp. P. Vercasson, Paris DESCRIPTION: Either that’s one big waiter brow-beating his way to a hefty tip, or the slight smoker at the table is about to be bullied into “sharing” his Quinquina Vouvray. It’s an interesting approach for attracting liqueur consumers from the self-taught illustrator, lithographer, and posterist who first earned a reputation for humorous drawings, then some notoriety by marrying Jane Avril, the cancan dancer immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec. Biais produced about a dozen posters, notable for their economy of design. (Art Nouveau; Alcohol)

      • MAURICE BIAIS (1875-1926). FOLIES - BERGÈRE. Circa 1900. 44x29 inches, 113x74 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris.
        Feb. 18, 2021

MAURICE BIAIS (1875-1926). FOLIES - BERGÈRE. Circa 1900. 44x29 inches, 113x74 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris.

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

MAURICE BIAIS (1875-1926) FOLIES - BERGÈRE. Circa 1900. 44 1/2x29 1/4 inches, 113x74 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears, replaced losses and restoration in margins and image; minor restoration along horizontal folds. Framed. An exceptional image of ballerinas backstage at the Folies Bergère, waiting to perform. Biais combines the Japonisme of Toulouse-Lautrec (notice the pronounced diagonal of the floor), with his personal mastery of flat tones and broad, sensuous outlining and adds an intriguing compositional trick. With one of the ballerinas looking out through a hole in the wings of the theatre, she is likely looking to see if one of her admirers is already in his seat. "Anyone viewing the poster could imagine that he was the one being watched" (Folies Bergere p. 8). Rare. Folies Bergere 30.

      • Jane Avril. 1895.
        Jun. 23, 2019

        Jane Avril. 1895.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: MAURICE BIAIS (ca. 1875-1926) SIZE: 31 3/8 x 47 in./79.6 x 119.2 cm PRINTER: Imp. Charle Verneau, Paris DESCRIPTION: Biais was a self-taught illustrator, lithographer, and posterist who never disclosed his personal data. He attracted attention first with humorous drawings; later he produced some lithographs good enough to be shown in the Salon of 1903. Considering that Jane Avril married the designer after he created this lively bit of frou-frou, one can only assume that she must have been rather impressed with his personal interpretation. (Art Nouveau; Dance; Jane Avril)

The son of a rich public notary, Maurice Biais was a socialite and a dandy on the Parisian scene, as well as a talented artist. In 1911, he married the performer Jane Avril, with whom he had a doomed, short-lived union. He designed numerous illustrations, graphics and posters including one for La Maison Moderne, for whom he also designed decorative objects. Here, much in the style of Sem (Georges Goursat), he captures a scene between races at a track. This was a work that was exhibited in New York City in 1901 at "the little gallery of Williams on Fifth Avenue, near Thirty-seventh street," as part of an exhibition of the artist''s work. The New York Times art critic reviewing the show on October 19, 1901, describes a "long frieze-like picture called ''Champs de Course'' . . . it is a procession of thin race horses mounted by jockeys; the faces of the latter are caricatures. Perhaps the underlying idea is a design for wall paper to be placed in the houses and fine stables of lovers of the turf" (New York Times, October 19, 1901).
