He studied under noted Philadelphia landscape and marine artist, William Trost Richards and later in Paris under genre and landscape painter, Otto Weber. Nineteenth- century New York art critic Theodore Tuckerman said of his work, "his excellent pictures of animals in landscapes are delineated with great authenticity and feeling". Bispham was born in Philadelphia, and spent most of his life there and in New York and Paris.He studied in Philadelphia under William Trost Richards and later in Paris with Otto Weber. Tuckerman noted his "excellent pictures" of animals in landscapes are delineated with "great authenticity and fine feeling".Bispham exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The Brooklyn Art Association, the Boston Art Club, the Century Association, Philadelphia Sketch Club and at the Royal Academy in London and the Paris Salons.

The collection includes several seldom-seen early Grove plays from San Francisco's famed Bohemian Club whose early members included Jack London, George Sterling, celebrities, politicians, and business magnates. From the Foreword to The Cave Man (1910), "The Grove Play of the Bohemian Club is the outgrowth of [The Cremation of Care] an illuminated spectacle produced annually among redwood trees in California. In The Man in the Forest, at the Midsummer Jinks of 1902, this spectacle first became a play, the text being the work of one author and the music the work of one composer. Since then, the music drama has been steadily elaborated." The elaboration included privately printed books by some of the great masters of West Coast fine press printing including John Henry Nash, The Grabhorn brothers, Arion Press and others.         MONUMENTAL CIVIL WAR OIL ON CANVAS BY BISPHAM. This spectacular painting, executed by Henry Collins Bispham (American, 1841-1882), depicts Union foragers returning with livestock. Foragers were responsible for scouring the countryside for food supplies for their advancing armies. This incredible, action-filled image depicts mounted soldiers and a black herdsman together with a great variety of livestock being herded back to base camp. A panoramic backdrop of forests, hills and waterfall. The magnificent period gesso decorated frame has title plaque "The Foragers Return-1864". Signed, lower left and dated 1864. Bispham, from Philadelphia, studied with masters such as William Trost Richards, and while in Paris he studied under Otto Webber. Many of his paintings were exhibited during his lifetime at various academies including the prestigious National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arte, and more. A magnificent Civil War Painting. SIZE: 40-1/2" x 72". CONDITION: Generally very good. There is some spot inpainting and one small closed puncture. 4-37280 (50,000-70,000)

        HENRY COLLINS BISPHAM (American, 1841-1882) "THE FORAGERS' RETURN-1864". Monumental oil on canvas scene shows a number of soldiers on horseback wielding swords, charging through a herd of cattle and sheep. Landscape scene shows a large waterfall with hills and woods, all under a blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower left and dated "1864". Housed in its original magnificent gesso decorated wide museum quality frame. Frame retaining an original Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts label with the alternative title "The Raid". This is the largest Bispham painting that we have been able to locate. A history of the artist and the painting is attached to the back. SIZE: 40-1/2" x 72". CONDITION: Some spot inpainting and one small closed puncture. Otherwise very good. 9-93673 (50,000-70,000)
