John Bogle (British, c.1746-1803) A portrait miniature of a Gentleman, wearing a white cravat and black jacket, his right arm tucked inside his jacket and his left arm resting on a column, holding a book signed and dated to the left 'JB / 1799' watercolour on ivory with later gold-plated frame with blue glass reverse h:7.50 cm The Scottish-born artist John Bogle was admired for his evocation of personality in his astonishingly detailed portrait miniatures. He was a member of the aristocracy, but never made any claim to his title, the Earl of Menteith. When he moved from Edinburgh to London in 1770, he met some of the most interesting characters in Georgian England, even accompanying Fanny Burney to witness the trial of Warren Hastings. In 1800, the year after the present work was painted, Bogle moved to Edinburgh where he remained until his death in 1803. The incorporation of architectural features in English portraiture was pioneered by Sir Joshua Reynolds from around 1760 onwards, and was used as a visual metaphor for the noble status of sitters.

AN ANTIQUE MINIATURE BROOCH, BY JOHN BOGLE The oval miniature depicting a gentleman within a border of half pearls Signed I.B. and dated 1782 John Bogle (1746-1803) was a skilled portrait miniaturist, born in Scotland where he studied at the Foulis Academy in Glasgow. In 1770 he moves to London. Here he exhibits his miniatures at the Society of Artists and some other works, including a self portrait, were shown at the Royal Academy. At the end of his life, Bogle moves back to Scotland where he dies in 1803. Very little is known about his life, but since his work can be found in the National Galleries of Scotland, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London, a brilliant miniaturist he was for sure.
