Condition A-: minor repaired tears at edges, one into upper image; minor restoration at edges; minor creases and abrasions in image. California-born Bonestell "was an American pioneer of space art who helped popularize manned space travel. He is well known for his cover art for science fiction magazines . . . as well as many books such as The Conquest of Space, The Exploration of Mars, and Beyond the Solar System" (https://www.bonestell.org/). In the 1920s, he lived in New York, and helped design some of the iconic Art Deco facades and architectural elements for the Chrysler building, the New York Central Building, and many office and apartment buildings around the city. He also collaborated on the designs for the Plymouth Rock Memorial, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, and various state capitols. It is not too surprising then, that he could render this mesmerizing and dramatic nighttime view down Park Avenue of the New York Central Building, a modern ziggurat, in all its glory. Construction on the building began in 1927 and was completed in 1929, at which point it was the tallest building in "Terminal City," the developed area that covered all of the tracks in the terminal. ARTIST: CHESLEY BONESTELL (1888-1986) SIZE: 27 x 40 3/4 in./68.3 x 103.6 cm PRINTER: Lathem Litho., Long Island City, New York DESCRIPTION: This romanticized nighttime view of the New York Central Building—a major element in the Grand Central Station complex on 46th Street in Manhattan—looks south on Park Avenue. Almost fifty years after the 1929 edifice was designed by the noted architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore, it was renamed the Helmsley Building to honor its owner, New York real-estate mogul Harry Helmsley. With the emphasis here on glamour and prestige, we get only a hint of the ambitious design at the base of the 34-story building: two arched portals which allow automobiles to bypass street traffic below, flanked, in turn, by smaller rectangular portals opening onto pedestrian shopping arcades. Surprisingly, the building today looks better than it did at the time of the poster, thanks to the efforts of Helmsley, who revised the roof and facade in 1978 with gilding. Sadly, it’s difficult not to mention the marring of this spectacular urban vista by the inclusion of the 58-story high Pan Am building, whose Met Life renaming did nothing to change its invasive shortcomings. Fabulous Oil on Board Painting. Titled "A Winter Day on Mars, Near the Pole". 14" x 11". Fantastic Provenance. This painting is inscribed on the back "Given to Willy Ley by Chesley Bonestell". It has been signed on the back by Soyuz Cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov. Signed by Apollo Astronauts Tom Stafford, Deke Slayton and Vance Brand as well as being signed by Carl Sagan. Incredibly accurate depiction of the Mars surface as has been shown with recent images coming back from Mars. The painting has an exhibition label from the Hudson River Museum where it was exhibited from 8/20/88-11/20/88. Chance to own not only a great Bonestell original but a painting with historical interest as well. Originally published in black and white on page 187 of "The Art of Chesley Bonestell" by Ron Miller and Frederick C. Durant III with Melvin H. Schuetz (London: Paper Tiger, 2001).

927. Chesley Bonestell vintage original concept painting for War of the Worlds. (Paramount, 1953) Accomplished in oil on artists’ board with 14.25 x 16.25 in. visible through wooden mat by the groundbreaking painter, designer, and illustrator Chesley Bonestell. Considered the “Father of Modern Space Art”, Bonestell defined the very look of Sci-Fi design in the era with his distinctive visual art and work on films such as Destination Moon, When Worlds Collide, and Conquest of Space. In addition, Bonestell worked as a matte painter, creating impressive settings for classics like Citizen Kane and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The War Machine in the Bonestell’s chilling alien invasion scene is loosely based on George Pal’s own early concept, and features an early attempt at the rotating “goose-neck” that later became the iconic “cobra-head” design made famous by the film. The painting also features two early concepts of what a Martian might look like prior to the much-later concept of a lobster-red, spindly creature with a three-lensed single eye. Bonestell’s concept was, obviously, much more anthropomorphic. The painting is also interesting from the standpoint that the artist took a stab at creature design, which he was not at all known to do in his long and illustrious career. Signed and titled by the artist in pencil at bottom right, “Chesley Bonestell – War of the Worlds”. This is one of only two pieces of original art that are known to have survived from this landmark film as all others were destroyed in a 1961 Bel Air fire at George Pal’s home. Presented in a vintage wooden frame measuring 20.25 x 23 in and retaining a label from Bonestell’s gallery on the verso. Unexamined out of frame. Presents in vintage fine condition. $8,000 - $10,000

Surprisingly, the building today looks better than it did at the time of the poster, thanks to the efforts of Helmsley, who revised the roof and facade in 1978 with gilding. Sadly, it's difficult not to mention the marring of this spectacular urban vista by the inclusion of the 58-story high Pan Am building, whose Met Life renaming did nothing to change its invasive shortcomings.

Artist: CHESLEY BONESTELL (1888-1986) Size: 27 x 40 5/8 in./68.6 x 103.2 cm Latham Litho., Long Island City, N.Y. A romanticized nighttime view of the New York Central Building, a major element in the Grand Central Station complex, on 46th Street in Manhattan, looking south on Park Avenue. Almost fifty years after the 1929 edifice was designed by the noted architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore, it was renamed the Helmsley Building to honor its owner, New York real-estate mogul Harry Helmsley.
