      George Robert Bonfield (1805 - 1898) Charcoal and goauche on paper signed lower right. Piece measures (5 x 9) and (12 x 16) inches. w/ frame. Born in Portsmouth, England, George Bonfield arrived in Philadelphia in 1816 and there learned stone carving from a stone master working on the New Jersey estate of Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napolean. He was also exposed to European art, and successfully copied Old Masters.

      George Bonfield o/c New Jersey Landscape: A framed oil on paper mounted on canvas landscape painting by English-born Philadelphia artist George Robert Bonfield (1808-1898), titled in pencil on canvas on reverse, which reads "[....] New Jersey by G Bonfield". It's a heavily treed landscape which turns into beach and water (with the white sail of a sailboat) at the lefthand side. Signed on the canvas and again on the top stretcher. The artist spent some of the 1850s living and working in New Jersey. Provenance: Robert A Goldstein. Size: Stretcher is 15.375" X 10.75", frame is 20.75" X 16.25". CONDITION: Some craquelure in the darkest, heavily-painted parts, along the bottom edge and in the trees. Tear to paper in upper left corner. Canvas needs to be tightened. Painting was cleaned in 1993 by Steven Erisoty and his report is included.

      George Robert Bonfield (American, 1805-1898) Delaware Shore Near Beverly Signed "G R Bonfield" l.l., titled on the reverse. Oil on paper, 10 x 14 3/4 in. (25.3 x 37.6 cm), framed. Condition: Small area of retouch, rippling. Literature: George Robert Bonfield: Philadelphia Marine Painter 1805-1898, Philadelphia: Philadelphia Maritime Museum, 1978, listed on page 75 as Untitled River Scene. N.B. The lot is accompanied by copies of two letters from James McClelland, author of the exhibition catalogue referenced above. In the letter dated May 5, 1978, McClelland suggested the painting at hand was done as a sketch for approval for a larger commissioned work, A View of the Delaware, Near Beverly. Bonfield summered in Beverly and painted many of his Delaware River scenes at that location. The commissioned painting referred to by McClelland is listed on page 30 in the above referenced publication.
