      • Alfred Hitchcock: Autographed & Inscribed Truffaut Book w/ Silhouette Sketch, Signed Letter & Personal Matchbook
        Jun. 08, 2024

Alfred Hitchcock: Autographed & Inscribed Truffaut Book w/ Silhouette Sketch, Signed Letter & Personal Matchbook

        Est: $1,500 - $2,000

First English printing of “Hitchcock” by François Truffaut, 1967, signed and inscribed by Alfred Hitchcock, including his famous silhouette drawing. Also including a signed letter referencing the plan to autograph this book, plus one of Hitch's personal customized matchbook covers. “Hitchcock” by François Truffaut, With the Collaboration of Helen G. Scott. Simon and Schuster: New York. 1967 English translation, First Printing. Bears the original owner's stamp on inside cover. The book is autographed and inscribed by Hitchcock, including a drawing of Hitch's famous silhouette. "To Graham, with fondest wishes, Hitch". Accompanying the book is an original typewritten letter on thin tissue paper with Alfred Hitchcock's letterhead, dated January 18, 1968. Hitch suggests meeting Robert Graham Wahn, Warner Bros. publicist for a drink for the purpose of autographing the Truffaut book. "Why don't you hold the book until I get to New York next, and I will contact you with the object of signing it. Maybe we could have a drink together. At present, I'm preparing a picture ["Topaz", 1969], but as I am under contract to Universal it would seem to preclude our getting together on this; because they handle all matters of personnel involved in making the picture. Will look forward to seeing you next time I come to New York.”  It is signed, “Hitch” in ink.  Additionally, taped to the book's introduction page is an original custom-designed personal matchbook cover featuring Hitchcok's silhouette. "Hitchcock/Truffaut" is François Truffaut's work discussing Alfred Hitchcock's films, based on their 1962 dialogue. Hitchcock's storytelling approach and technical insights, like the MacGuffin concept and dolly zoom, are explored. This edition includes film stills, Hitchcock's sketches, and a filmography. Reception-wise, it solidified Hitchcock's auteur status in the US. Phillip Lopate praised its depth in The New York Times Book Review.  Provenance: This lot comes directly from the family of former Warner Brothers publicity man Robert Graham Wahn, who worked public relations and acted as chaperone and sometime bodyguard to various stars in the 1940s and 1950s during their visits to New York City for publicity purposes. Mr. Wahn archived many signed photographs, publicity stills, letters and ephemera related to films throughout his tenure with Warners.
