      FRANCESCO BOTTI (attr. a)

      Est: €400 - €700

Francesco Botti (Florence 1640 - 1711) Portia Oil on canvas 84 x 72 cm Interestingly, although the painting is connoted by Pignoni's decisive stylistic influence, it is not a copy but a reworking of his master's half-length figures.

Francesco Botti (1640 - 1711), Samson and Delilah

      Est: €6,000 - €8,000

The scene, cut tightly on the main characters, represents Samson and Delilah. In the foreground, the biblical hero lies asleep on the woman's lap; he still wears his armor and puts his left hand on his helmet. Dalila, very elegantly dressed with a blue cloak and white tunic covered with another rose, takes a lock of his hair and cuts it with scissors. It is the story of the biblical passage in which Delilah, in order to take away Samson's strength, cuts his hair. The painting, after a recent cleaning, has regained strength in the colors, and better legibility; and the state of conservation is good. The painting is unpublished, but a version of this same subject with some minor variations is cataloged in the photo library of the Federico Zeri Foundation, with the attribution to Simone Pignoni.

      Francesco Botti: Judith Beheads Holofernes

      Est: €7,000 - €10,000

BOTTI, FRANCESCO Florence 1640 - 1711 Title: Judith Beheads Holofernes. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 73 x 87cm. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Certificate: F. Berti, Florence, 2016. Provenance: Private ownership, Italy. Loose brushstrokes and a sumptuous style characterise this remarkably charming composition by Francesco Botti, a renowned master among the Florentine painters of the second half of the 17th century. Having worked in the workshop of Simone Pignoni and studied similar representations by the master, Botti tried his hand at this subject, which he repeated several times in the course of his career. The composition presented here, similar to the others known but in landscape format, depicts the moment of victory of the biblical heroine as she holds aloft the macabre trophy, the head of Holofernes. The landscape format enlarges the scenic space and introduces the third figure, the maid Abra.

SAMSON UND Delilah Öl auf Leinwand. 96 x 118 cm. Provenienz: Ehemals Privatsammlung Italien. (12417520) (11) Francesco Botti, 1640/45 Florence – 1710/11 SAMSON AND DELILAH Oil on canvas. 96 x 118 cm. Accompanied by an expert‘s report by Dr Alessandro Delpriori, University of Florence. It has only recently been possible to identify the artist of the painting on offer for sale in this lot - i.a. due to the discovery of another painting - as pointed out in the enclosed expert‘s report. Botti trained in the workshop of Simone Pignone (1611/14-1698) and his teacher‘s influence on his oeuvre is obvious as another painting with the same subject was originally attributed to Pignone and is listed as such at the photo library of the Federico Zeri Foundation. The hitherto unpublished painting on offer for sale in this lot, can now be seen in connection with a slightly smaller painting of the same subject, however, its current whereabouts is unknown. The comparison of both paintings clearly shows the high quality of the painting on offer for sale in this lot dated by the expert to the early 1690s. The report also lists other examples for comparison such as Botti‘s Sophonisba (Museo Civico di Montepulciano) and Judith and Holofernes from a private collection. Provenance: Formerly private collection, Italy.
