        • George Opitz Original Watercolor, Butcher
          Oct. 07, 2023

          George Opitz Original Watercolor, Butcher

          Est: $1,500 - $2,500

OPITZ, George (1775-1841). Chez le Boucher (Butcher). Watercolor and gouache on paper. c.1820. 11" x 8 1/2" visible, 22" x 19 3/4" framed. This vibrant scene drawn by the prolific view maker Georg Opitz captures a moment inside a French butcher shop in the early nineteenth century. At the center of the painting, a captain drawn in a manner that speaks to the caricature style frequently employed by Opitz purchases a goose, which dangles humorously like an umbrella at his side. The woman accompanying him looks brightly at the viewer, almost as though posing for a photograph. Though little is known about the personal life of Georg Opitz, he produced a large volume of illustrations and watercolors during the early nineteenth century. While his works are often laden with satire and social commentary, their warmth and charm is undeniable.
