      Est: £300 - £500

John Chessell Buckler FSA (British, 1770-1851) A prospect from the South-West of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden signed lower right 'J C Buckler', dated 1832 and inscribed ‘Saffron Walden Church’ pencil, pen and ink and grey wash, unframed 32 x 22.5cm The parish church of Saffron Walden is the largest non-cathedral church in the county of Essex and the spire, which was added in 1832 during an extensive restoration of the building’s fabric, is the tallest in the county as well. This detailed drawing, dated to the year the restoration works were finished, was presumably executed as a record of how the newly repaired and improved building looked. Buckler was an artist and architect whose drawings of churches and historic buildings before or after they were altered, or even demolished, are an invaluable resource and record.
