        Feb. 03, 2018

TANI BUNCHO (1763 – 1840): THE SENNIN KINKO

        Est: €950 - €1,900

Ink and light paint on silk. Japan, 19th cent. Kinko was a Chinese wise man, called Qingao in China, whose name means “great qin-player”. The qin is a kind of Chinese zither. One day, the King of the Seas invited him to visit him in his palace, where Kinko traveled by riding a giant carp. The painting depicts the bearded wise man, or sennin (immortal) with a flowing robe on the carp, which has the look of a thoroughbred, rising up from out the frothy sea waves. Very good, dynamic composition; the head of the carp are very expressive and the folds of the robe very lively and precise, while Kinko’s facial features are subtle in their appearance! Buncho was broadly educated and initially occupied himself with copying old masters as well as sketching natural motifs. His talent was recognized by Prince Matsudaira Sadanobu and he received the large commission to paint the pictures for “79 important place”. Around 1800, he increasingly turned to the Nanga-style and created works of amazingly inspired freshness and precision in their details. Subsequently, the dynamism of his painting would grow even stronger, as this image also evidences impressively. In the upper right-hand corner, an inscription and signature, BUN-CHO , as well as two red seals, the upper of which may read “Gagakusai’s seal”, Gagakusai being one of his artist’s names, while the lower, large seal also reads Buncho. Silk brocade mounting, wooden rollers and wooden box.
