Paintings of similar sizes sell for up to 11,500 euros on the international market The present fine painting is the work of the Belgian artist Jean Henri De Coene, and it is dated 1834. It depicts an elderly peasant woman in an interior at a spindle next to a fireplace. In front of it are placed all sorts of vegetables. Tired from work, the peasant woman is asleep. Next to her, the table is decorated with the evening meal, while some kitchen utensils are gathered beneath. The painting offers a naturalistic representation of the objects that appear amazingly realistic, especially in the objects on the table. The artist also succeeded in giving the painting a great atmospheric effect. The painting is signed and dated lower left, 'Henri Decoene 1834' and mounted in a gold-toned stucco frame. It is in good overall condition. The canvas has been relined. The canvas shows light craquelure in parts. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching, especially along the edges, as well as some larger retouched areas to the upper part of the painting. The frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 94 x 79 cm. The stretcher frame measures 73.5 x 59.6 cm. He was a pupil of David and Joseph Paelinck, and was appointed professor at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts.       DIE UNTERRICHTSSTUNDE IM FAMILIENKREIS Öl auf Holz. 63 x 55 cm. Rechts unten signiert. Genrebild in bürgerlichem Interieur. Die Wände abgedunkelt, die Personengruppe wirkungsvoll beleuchtet. Im Zentrum ein Klapptisch, an dem ein Mann, der Lehrer oder Vater des Knaben, in einem Lehnstuhl sitzt, eine Schiefertafel mit Griffel in der Hand. Am Tisch ein Knabe ermüdet-nachdenklich auf die Zeilen deutend, dahinter wohl die Großmutter mit erhobenem Zeigefinger, die junge Frau links wohl die Mutter des Knaben. Die Feinmalerei des Gemäldes miniaturhaft, die Situation und Gesichter der Dargestellten lebensnah wiedergegeben. Auffallend ist, dass der im Lehnstuhl dargestellte Mann am ehesten Portraitmerkmale aufweist, was darauf hinweisen könnte, dass es sich um das Portrait eines Lehrers handelt. Ebenso detailreich und erst bei näherer Betrachtung erkennbar die im dunklen Hintergrund wiedergegebenen Gegenstände an der Rückwand, wie etwa eine Marienfigur neben Zinntellern und Gefäßen auf dem Kamingesims oder der von der Decke herabhängende Kronenhaken. Links hinten Blick in ein Nebenzimmer mit Wandbrunnen. (8408930)
