SIR WILLIAM COLDSTREAM CBE (1908-1987) "Sergeant Major Bellani, Italian Prisoner of War, circa 1945, oil on canvas, 35.5" x 25". See illustration. According to the Late Dr. John Rake, this powerful unfinished portrait was painted by Coldstream in Rake's house in Shenington, nr. Banbury, Oxfordshire. Sittings began on 17th September and ended on 29th November 1945. The 24 sittings came to an end on account of Bellani being repatriated. Dr. Rake was the attending medical officer at the Horely POW Camp and arranged for the sittings. Sergeant Major Bellani cycled freely the five miles from the camp to Shenington on account that he was no longer an enemy alien. Exhibited: William Coldstream, Arts Council, 1962 (24).

This still life was painted at Canford School near Wimborne where Coldstream was invited to become an art master on the recommendation of Kenneth Clarke to the Headmaster, Reverend Clifford Canning. Coldstream did not take up the post, but became friends with the family and painted the portraits of both Mrs Enid Canning (1938) and The Reverend Canning (1946-8). This study clearly demonstrates Coldstream's system of building up applied patches of colour.

The date of this unfinished canvas is based on a visit by Coldstream's friend Dr John Rake to Canford School during the summer of 1942, where he spend a week to recover from jaundice. Rake had known Coldstream since his Slade student days when Rake was studying medicine at UCL. Rake recalls Coldstream making a start on this picture then.

Texan-born poet, writer and critic John Howard Griffin (1920-1980) is remembered primarily as the author of Black Like Me, a modern classic based on his experiences travelling in the segregated Deep South disguised as a black man in 1959. Griffin's research consisted of chemically dying his skin, shaving his head and documenting over a six week period his transition into the black race, his experiences of racial bigotry and the reactions of those he knew beforehand. After the release of the book, Griffin was personally vilified, hung in effigy in his home town and received death threats for the rest of his life. It was probably after seeing Coldstream's portrait of his friend W.H. Auden that Griffin commissioned the present work. With its various marks and measurements applied directly onto the canvas, it in many ways typifies Coldstream's methods, yet there is a certain depth of observation and spark of life that implies a greater depth of feeling between artist and sitter than is normally apparent. Certainly the finished work was met with great enthusiasm by Griffin who later wrote to the artist, 'I am delighted with the spirited portrait. It is more alive than I am. I have a feeling it will walk into the room some night and take over'.

NOTE Painted in June 1945, the current work is listed in Bruce Laughton's working catalogue raisonné as WMC 117. Coldstream arrived in Florence at the end of May 1945 while still working as an official war artist. He had chosen his subject matter within a couple of days of arriving in the war-torn city and worked on 'the Arno picture' for 15 consecutive days before being summoned to Rome by the War Office to begin his return journey to England. The Ponte Vecchio was the only bridge in Florence that had not been blown up when the city was captured back from the Germans in August 1944. The present work was painted entirely 'on the spot' from the empty first floor room of a hotel which had suffered partial destruction as a result of the German demolitions. The arcaded structure on the right is part of the Medici covered passage which connected the Pitti Place on the south bank to the Uffizi Palace on the north. Though Coldstream did not quite have time to finish his painting in the time allowed, Bruce Laughton has pointed out that the small measuring marks dotted across the canvas, and the key horizontal and verticals, show that he knew exactly where everything was in the picture and that to finish it would be just a matter of paring down from larger shapes to smaller ones within them. In a letter to Dr. John Rake dated 8 June 1945, Coldstream described the painting upon which he was 'at least well embarked' (Tate Archives, 787.77) In a later letter dated 29th August 1945, the artist wrote again to Rake of his fondness for the work, and expressed 'rather a pang at not having finished it' (787.82). The last picture painted abroad as a War artist, the present work was neverthess not sent to the War Office as part of Coldstream's contract. Instead it entered the possession of his friends the Rev. and Mrs C.B. Canning and by the spring of 1949 it hung in their bedroom at Hanford, Dorset (letter from Enid Canning to Coldstream). The painting is now being sold to benefit Hanford School, founded by the Cannings in 1947 and run by their daughter Sarah until 2004 when it was passed over to the Charitable Trust. We are very grateful to Bruce Laughton for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
