FRANCISCO COLLANTES (Madrid, h. 1599 - Madrid, h. 1656), Las lágrimas de San Pedro

      Est: €24,000 - €28,000

      Est: €30,000 - €35,000

FRANCISCO COLLANTES (Madrid, around 1599 - 1656). "Saint Mary of Egypt". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. It has an old label on the back. Measurements: 121,5 x 79 cm; 143 x 101 cm (frame). Bibliography: Artur Ramón Art, Barcelona. "Analogies", autumn 2013. Illustrated on pages 13 and 33 of the catalogue. In this oil painting by the Madrid-born Francisco Collantes, the hermit saintly Maria Egipcíaca retires to pray in the middle of nature. She occupies the right-hand corner of the composition, and the rest is a display of lush vegetation. Saint Mary Egyptian is purging her sins as a former prostitute and is presented to us from the front, very mystical, dressed in a coat of her own hair made of ashes. Before her we see the three loaves of bread on which she was to be fed frugally for sixty years. In the distance, in the background, Zosimo appears to give her communion. By the time he arrives, she is already dead. This is a painting with a high quality of drawing, firm and delicate, with elegant forms softened by a very nuanced colour, rich in glazes and soft gradations. Saint Mary Egyptian (ca. 344 - ca. 421) is venerated as the patron saint of penitent women, especially in the Coptic Church, but also in the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican Churches. The main source of information about her is the "Vita" written by Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem, in the 6th century. She was born in Egypt, and at the age of twelve she went to Alexandria, where she led a dissolute life, according to some authors, devoting herself to prostitution. However, Sophronius claims that she often refused to accept the money offered for her sexual favours, driven only by "insatiable desire and irrepressible passion". After seventeen years, Mary travelled to Jerusalem for the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, driven by the desire to meet lustful pilgrims. There, however, when she attempted to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, an invisible force prevented her from doing so. Due to its formal characteristics we can place this work in the circle of Francisco Collantes, a singular artist at the time because he specialised in landscape painting, something rare in Spain, unlike in Italy or Flanders. However, he was also widely recognised as a still-life and figure painter. His fame was due to his landscapes, which were acquired by private individuals and also by the court. Particularly noteworthy is the series of landscapes, with or without scenes of martyrdom of saints, which Collantes painted for the decoration of the Buen Retiro palace in the 1630s and 1640s. These works coincided with the most brilliant period of the painter's career, when he enjoyed greater prestige and his output was more abundant. On the other hand, this series of landscapes denote the key influences of Collantes' language: the Roman tendencies of the first decades of the 17th century and the Nordic models. In addition, his "Incendio de Troya" ("Fire of Troy"), also for the same palace, shows Collantes' mastery in constructing architectural perspectives. Also of note in this group is the "Vision of Ezekiel", a work much admired by his contemporaries, defined by Palomino as "marvellous", in which the artist manages to combine a magnificent anatomical study with an accurate depiction of the secondary characters and an imposing scenographic landscape. Collantes was also one of the few 17th-century Spanish painters known in his time in Europe, and in fact one of his works was acquired by Louis XIV. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum, as well as in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, the National Gallery of Denmark and the Louvre Museum, among other collections.

Attributed to FRANCISCO COLLANTES (Madrid, around 1599 - 1656). "Landscape with ruins". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. Label on the back with old attribution to Roelandt Savery. It presents light repainting. Measurements: 149 x 122 cm; 157 x 130 cm (frame). Due to its formal characteristics we can attribute this canvas to Francisco Collantes, a singular artist at the time because he specialised in landscape painting, something rare in Spain, unlike in Italy or Flanders. The work shows a high quality of drawing, firm and delicate, with elegant forms softened by a very nuanced colour, rich in glazes and soft gradations. It depicts a vast Italian landscape, possibly the park of Villa Gregoriana in Tivoli (Lazio, Italy), judging by the circular temple dedicated to Vesta, goddess of the hearth, which emerges from the lush vegetation and rises majestically next to a waterfall with its buoyant waters. In the foreground, on the right of the canvas, is the solitary figure of a grazing donkey, a highly original aspect given that no human figure is visible in the rest of the composition. Francisco Collantes was also widely recognised as a still-life and figure painter. His fame was due to his landscapes, which were acquired by private individuals and also by the court. Particularly noteworthy is the series of landscapes, with or without scenes of martyrdom of saints, which Collantes painted for the decoration of the Buen Retiro Palace in the 1630s and 1640s. FRANCISCO COLLANTES - San Jerónimo penitente

      Est: -

FRANCISCO COLLANTES Madrid? h. 1599 - 1656 “San Jerónimo penitente” Oil on canvas Measurements 111 x 92 cm Artist of great versatility in the outlook of Spanish painting of the first third of the 17th century. The few documentary references that have survived until today (Palomino, Ceán Bermúdez) testify that he was a disciple of Vicente Carducho. We must consider Francisco Collantes as a painter endowed with special qualities for the landscape genre, because of the numerous works that come from commissions of Buen Retiro. From this relationship with the courtly environment, the painter enjoyed an important network of clients. However, he also made some religious-themed works in which he manifests a great knowledge of riberesque naturalism and the Neapolitan currents (San Onofre, Museo del Prado, San Pedro, private collection). The work that concerns us is related to a San Jerónimo (oil on canvas, 128 x 102 cm) attributed to José de Ribera, today in the Museo del Prado that comes from the legacy Juan Gómez de Molina and Elio, II Marquis of Fontana.

Pedro de San José Betancur; Hermano Pedro

      Est: -

76 x 92 cm ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCISCO COLLANTES (Madrid, 1599 - Madrid, 1656) The Saint, popularly known as Saint Brother Peter, was a Franciscan religious born in Tenerife and who went as a missionary to Guatemala where he founded the Order of the Betlemites. He is considered a historical figure of the Canary Islands, being also a key figure in the history and evangelization of Guatemala where he did a great social work founding the first convalescent hospital and the first popular school for children and adults, regardless of age , race or religion for acceptance in these two institutions. He is represented with a Franciscan habit and a bell, sometimes it is also accompanied by a canary shepherd's lance, referring to his origin and his father's profession in the islands. He is represented here in a moment of agitation, ringing the bell with his left hand while holding a cross with his right. The gaze raised to the sky in an imploring attitude, the realistic face with very marked wrinkles and graying hair, even those of the beard that falls in waves on the chest. The way to mark the expression and the passage of time, both in the face and hands, as well as the treatment of hair and beard takes us to other saints of the Madrid painter, such as San Onofre painted around 1645 and today preserved in the Prado Museum (invent. P003027) showing in both cases a strong naturalism and a deep knowledge of the Neapolitan currents of the moment. Oil on canvas. 76 x 92 cm

Estimation 3 000 - 4 000 €
