        Louis Antoine Collas (French, 1775-1856)

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Louis Antoine Collas (French, 1775-1856, act. New Orleans, 1822-1829), "Antoine Alcide Delpeuch (1799-1845)" and "Mme. Antoine Alcide Delpeuch, née Marie Louise Chloé Grandchamps (1807-1886)", 2 watercolors on ivory, latter signed and dated "1827" lower left, sights 3 1/2 in. x 2 7/8 in., original ormolu within ebonized oval frames; together with a yellow gold bracelet, c. 1830, fleur-de-lis and floral decoration, belonged to Mme. Delpeuch, presented on a velvet-lined stand under a circular glass dome, wood base. (3 pcs.) Provenance: Didier Inc., New Orleans, Nov. 2002. Note: These beautifully depicted miniature portraits were most likely created shortly after the marriage of Chloé Grandchamps to Antoine Delpeuch, which occurred c. 1825-1827. The first of the couple’s children was born about two years later, and, sadly Antoine Delpeuch left his wife a widow in 1845. She never remarried and was called the Widow Delpeuch or Mrs. Delpeuch for the remainder of her life. Census records and City Directories show that Chloé Grandchamps Delpeuch lived with her sons and daughters until her death in 1886. Although she lived the majority of her life in New Orleans, Chloé Granchamps Delpeuch was born in Santiago, Cuba, then known as the Spanish Colonial Territory St. Yago de Cuba. Her father, who had fled from St. Domingue to Cuba during the Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804, was a Frenchman named François Julien Grandchamps, who served the French government with a patent to practice Pharmacy in St. Domingue. After a brief time in Cuba, during which he met and married a fellow Frenchwoman called Louise Marie Martin and Chloé was born, François moved his family to Baltimore in 1809, and then to New Orleans in 1811, where he became one of the first licensed pharmacists in America.
