Edwaert Collier, Vanitas Still Life with Sword, Terrestrial Globe and Musical Instruments

          Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Signed and dated lower right beside the music score: E. Collier 1696 / f. Edwaert Collier is one of the most celebrated masters of Flemish vanitas still lifes. This signed and dated depiction from 1696 features one of his typical compositions, in which elements such as the open book leaning on the back of a mandolin are presented prominently in front of a terrestrial globe and other instruments arranged on the table. The Latin quote on the note attached to the pillar in the background reveals the true message of the painting to the viewer: "Do not forget that you are mortal". We would like to thank Dr Fred G. Meijer, Amsterdam, for kindly confirming the authenticity of this piece upon examination of digital photographs.

Edwaert Collier, Vanitas Still Life with Coins, Pearls, a Pocket Watch, Eyeglasses, an Earthenware Candleholder, a Skull, Musical Instruments, Books, an Overturned Rummer, Sheet Music, a Globe, and an Hourglass on a Table before a Curtain

Monogrammed and dated lower right on the book: EC 1661 (EC conjoined) This portrait-format vanitas still life is an early masterpiece by Edwaert Collier. In this work, the artist explores for the first time a theme that he would return to again and again throughout his long career. Born in Breda, Collier moved to Haarlem, where his works met with great success. His Haarlem compositions reveal the clear influence of the city's leading still-life painter, Pieter Claesz. (1597-1660). Before he was admitted to the Guild of St Luke in 1664, Collier may have trained under Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne (1628-1702), whose work is also influenced by the art of Pieter Claesz. A central and recurring element in Collier's vanitas still lifes is the skull. When the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco sold the present painting, the skull, crowned with a laurel wreath, was still overpainted with a vase adorned with laurel leaves. During the later cleaning in 1985, the vase was removed and the skull underneath was exposed. We encounter it again in a vanitas still life by the artist from 1661, which is in the collection of the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Helsinki. Other vanitas still lifes can be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Collier's composition is based on a vanitas still life by Pieter Claesz. dated 1655, which was on the art market in 2001 (Sotheby's, New York, 25th January 2001, lot 159). His painting, made six years later, uses the main elements of the model, even taking into account the placement and appearance of the signature as well as the date. However, Collier adds new pictorial elements: a green silk curtain replaces the column that Claesz. inserted in the upper right. The contents of the open book in the centre of the picture have been changed and show a page from the Amsterdam edition of 1634 of Adriaen Cornelisz. van Haemstede's "Historien der Vromer Martelaren" (History of the Faithful Martyrs). The title page of the same book also appears in some still lifes by Claesz. possible teacher van der Vinne. Other elements such as the globe in the background, the sheet music, the coins and the almanac are taken from the model. Each of these pictorial elements is intended to remind the viewer of the transience of life: the hourglass and the pocket watch refer to the inexorable passage of time. The instruments and the score imply a connection between the fleeting nature of music and time itself. Similarly, the earthenware candlestick, with a single burning ember resting on its rim, represents the extinction of life, while the books and globe refer to the limits of earthly knowledge. The overturned rummer can be interpreted as a warning against intemperance.

Edwaert Collier, Vanitas Still Life with Nautilus Chalice and Bust

          Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Signed centre left: E. Colyer. fe: (above the flute) Numerous objects are depicted on a table in a densely packed composition, including a skull, a nautilus goblet, a celestial globe and the plaster bust of a boy. The symbolic content of the still life, already evident in some of the objects, is made abundantly clear by the inscription on a piece of paper at the right edge of the picture: "SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI" - Thus passes the glory of the world. The skull in particular refers to the transience of everything earthly, leaving no doubt about the transience of man as well. In addition to Collier's trompe-l’œil still lifes, the artist's vanitas depictions enjoyed great popularity. With them, he demonstrated his ability to render a wide variety of surface textures in a painterly manner, in this case the shimmering mother-of-pearl of the nautilus shell, the dog eared book pages or the shiny wood of the lute. The painting is registered in the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie), The Hague, as an authentic work by this artist under no. 189228.

Estimation 20 000 - 30 000 €

Signed and dated upper right: E. Colier fe: 1692The still life painter Edwaert Collier resided in Leiden from 1667 to 1691, and was accepted by the Guild of Saint Luke in 1673. He probably resettled to London in 1673, before returning to Leiden in 1702. However, his eldest dated work is again inscribed “London”. Collier was most well-known for his opulent vanitas still lifes. This genre enjoyed the most popularity in the Protestant Netherlands and was intended to encourage the viewer to reflect on and contemplate the complexities of earthly life. The objects depicted allude to the various vanities of this world: The striving for power, wealth, fame, knowledge and pleasure are confronted with reminders of mortality and the unstoppable passage of time. The apparent disorder that seems to preside over the arrangements in these still lifes is deceptive: The various items and their placement in fore-, mid- and background are form a hierarchy of meaning, and each object hides a symbolism that the viewer is thus invited to ponder on.

EDWAERT COLLIER, VANITAS WITH CROWN, SCEPTRE, JEWELLERY AND GLOBE, oil on canvas (relined), 84.5 x 70.5 cm

          Est: €36,000 - €50,000

In this vanitas still life Edwaert Collier alludes to power and wealth through the use of symbols such as the crown and scepter, goblet and globe as well as a treasure chest full of medals, coins, pearl necklaces and rings. A portrait of the Emperor Augustus, the mighty ruler of antiquity, can also be seen in the open book. This depiction of might and wealth is undermined by Collier through subtle symbols of fugacity and the words of warning with which he addresses the beholder. On the left-hand side a dying candle can be seen, a symbol of death. On the right-hand side a slip of paper sticks out from the pages of a book, it reads: „Nemo ante mortem beatus dici potest", the famous sentence that Solons said to King Croesus: "No one can be called happy before his death". Edwaert Collier was famous for such opulent vanitas still lifes that warned the viewer against the earthly pursuit of power, wisdom and wealth. Collier was born in Breda and was active in Haarlem and Leiden, where in 1673 he was registered as member of the Lucas guild. A sojourn in England is also known; interesting insofar as some of his tromp l´oeils (another of Collier´s specialties) show English newspapers and language of the time. In general, Collier´s paintings reveal his strong affinity towards words and literature. In this painting the open book depicts the frontispiece of the German translation of the novel "Prinz Kalloandro" by the Italian poet Giovanni Ambrogio Marini, published in 1656 by Johann Wilhelm von Steubenberg.
