      JOHN COLLINS (1814-1902) NEW YORK . . . ALWAYS EXCITING! / GO BY PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD. Gouache maquette. Circa 1940s. 42 1/2x27 1/4 inches, 108x69 1/4 cm. Condition A / A-: minor abrasions in image; pencil notation and small tape pieces in outer margins; pin holes in margins; painted on artist board. Framed. The original maquette for a poster that was issued by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The painted artist board is stamped on the verso by Al Paul Lefton Company, an advertising agency founded in 1926. This view of the lower Manhattan skyline and piers from under the Brooklyn Bridge appears to match the landscape from the 1940s. For the poster, See Swann sale 1906, Lot 286.

      Oil landscape painting of a forested river, in the foreground a duck hunter fires across the water, children stand on the bank near a few cows. On the opposite bank a river mill makes use of the river. Verso, attributed to John Collins, an artist active mid-18th century. Unsigned. Housed in a carved gilt frame. 40 inches height, 53 inches width sight. 45 inches height, 58 inches width. 40"H x 53"W. Good.

Original blue blind-decorated cloth, gilt-lettered on upper cover (rebacked). FIRST EDITION of this fine series of plates, including views of the state house, the "Friends" meeting house, the Glen, Ocean House, Easton's Beach, Château-sur-mer, Spouting Rock and Adams Pond. "One of the most delightful and sought after of the American books of color views" (McGrath, American Colorplate Books p. 122). Sabin 14442.
