(Amsterdam 1713–1761) The Sint Laurenskerk, Rotterdam, from the Northeast; and The Grote Markt, Haarlem, from the Northwest, signed lower right (the second): J. T. Kompe f. and dated on the clock: AN/NO/ 17/30, oil on panel, each 40 x 52.1 cm, framed, a pair (2) Provenance: sale, Christie’s, New York, 31 October 2017, lot 43; where bought by the present owner The present detailed and elegant views of Rotterdam and Haarlem lit by gentle skies are outstanding examples within the early oeuvre of one of the Dutch Republic’s foremost architectural painters of the 18th century. They are among the first known paintings executed by the artist. Inspired by the artistic register and innovations of his forebears, such as the townscape painter Jan van de Heyden (1637–1713), in the carefully composed prospect of Haarlem’s St. Bavo, ten Compe has substituted the date on the clock tower that in reality reads ‘AN/NO/15/20’ for ‘AN/NO/1730’, the year when the painting was executed. Ten Compe, then a precocious seventeen year old, has taken other liberties with this view of the Grote Markt. While the Vleeshal, or meat market, and coffee house are shown in other contemporary views, he has relocated the Enschede publishing house, framing the right of the the composition with its inscribed signage, from its real location on the Frankenstraat. This may have been done to emphasise civic pride in the town’s printing industry. Haarlemers regarded native son Laurens Coster (circa 1370–1440) as the inventor of the printing press. These innovations of ten Compe’s entertained his patrons, attracting the attention of the wealthy collector Gerrit Braamcamp (1699–1771), whose collection of 380 Dutch and Flemish paintings was of considerable importance. The vibrancy of the quayside, before Rotterdam’s St Laurenskirk, (currently the only remainder of the medieval city of Rotterdam, following its reconstruction after the Second World War) is enhanced by the brightly painted carriage wheels and courtly dress of the couple processing past the church. The panel underneath displays an earlier, abandoned composition, with a series gabled canal houses projecting through the sky beside the Laurenskerk. The Haarlem view has two figures which were not carried through into the final paint stage. These pentimenti are typical of Jan ten Compe.

The Witte Vrouwenpoort, Utrecht oil on panel 34.1 x 47.3 cm. NOTES Jan ten Compe began his career as an apprentice to the decorative wallpaper and landscape painter Dirk Dalens III (1688-1753), before establishing himself as one of the leading Dutch painters of cityscapes of the eighteenth century. He studied the works of his famous predecessors, Jan van der Heyden and Gerrit Berckheyde and, like them, painted mostly topographically accurate views. These works were much sought after and Ten Compe received commissions from several distinguished art-lovers and connoisseurs, including Gerrit Braamcamp. The famous collector praised Ten Compe's ability to capture reality and to follow nature with extraordinary accuracy. Another view of the Wittevrouwenpoort, signed, oil on panel and measuring 46 x 61 cm., is in the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, showing the gate from the right instead of the angle from which the present lot was painted. The Witte Vrouwenpoort, one of the entrance gates to Utrecht, was the final point of the century-old route between De Bilt and the city. It was here that travellers from outside paid a toll in order to be permitted entrance into the town. After the demolition of the gate, a police checkpoint was established on its location.

Anonymous sale; Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 8-21 February 1966, lot 65, as signed and dated 'J.T. Compe f 1748' (to Dreesmann). Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. A-33). LITERATURE A. Van Hegelsom-Van Blitterswijk, Jan ten Compe (1713-1761): Stadsgezichten van Den Haag en omgeving, Hoenderloo, 1985 (unpublished thesis, University of Nijmegen), pp. 52-3, no. 4, illustrated. C. Dumas, Haagse stadsgezichten 1550-1800 Topografische schilderijen van het Haags Historisch Museum, Zwolle, 1991, pp. 196-7, fig. 8, as one of a pair. NOTES Ten Compe was a highly respected, and correspondingly well-paid, artist in his own time (see also lot 1221). He studied with Dirk Dalens III and was trained as a painter of room decorations. After his apprenticeship he specialised in cityscapes following his seventeenth-century predecessors Jan van der Heyden and Gerrit Berckheyde. As listed by C. Dumas ( Haagse Stadsgezichten 1550-1800 Topografische schilderijen van het Haags Historisch Museum, Zwolle, 1991, pp. 40-1), Ten Compe painted at least forty pictures of The Hague, almost all dating from the 1740s and 1750s, of which roughly twenty have survived. They are characterised by a balanced composition, defined by an elegant play of light, with a cool and bright palette and little staffage, conveying a characteristically tranquil atmoshpere. Ten Compe painted views of the Hofvijver and the surrounding buildings (Buitenhof, Stadhouderlijk kwartier) on several occasions, for example those listed by Dumas ( op. cit., nos. 8, 9 and 14). Dumas notes that the present lot may have had a pendant, probably the view of the Buitenhof seen from the Mauritstower (see under provenance: in the Rietmulder sale of 1771, lots 51-62 were all views of The Hague, all on panel, all of the same dimensions and according to the sales catalogue all twelve were painted under the supervision of the famous painter J[acob] de Wit, all of them with very detailed rendering [ Deze 12 Stukken of Gezigten van 's Hage (...) zijn onder directie van de vermaarde Konst Schilder J. de Wit geschildert, en alle zeer uitvoerig uitgewerkt ]).

The Gelderse Kade and the Waag, Amsterdam signed 'I.T./Kompe' (lower right, on the barrel) oil on panel 39.9 x 52 cm. (153/4 x 201/2 in.) PROVENANCE With Colnaghi, London (label on the reverse). Vroom, Amsterdam. Charles Staal, Amsterdam. With David Koetser, Zrich, 1994, acquired by Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. A-1). NOTES Ten Compe began his career as an apprentice to Dirk Dalens III, before establishing himself as one of the leading Dutch painters of cityscapes of the eighteenth century. He studied the works of his famous predecessors, Jan van der Heyden (see lot 1227) and Gerrit Berckheyde (see lot 1222). His topographical views were much sought after, and Ten Compe received commissions from several distinguished art-lovers and connoisseurs, including the famous collector Gerret Braamcamp, who praised his ability to capture reality and to follow nature with extraordinary accuracy. Although he normally charged between five and eight hundred guilders for his works, Ten Compe is known to have received as much as two thousand guilders for a view of the St. Anthonieswaag on the Nieuwmarkt, commissioned by Heer Van de Velde of Amsterdam. The St. Antonieswaag, or Nieuwe Waag, on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam, was originally built in 1488 as a city gate, the St. Anthoniespoort, and formed part of the city wall. From 1617 onwards, the lower floor was used as a weigh-house and in the nineteenth century it became an oil warehouse. The upper part of the building was used variously as a theatrum anatomicum (the guild-room of the surgeons in the Waag once housed Rembrandt's famous Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, now in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, and his Anatomical Lesson of Dr. Joan Deyman, now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), a collegium chirurgicum, a dissection room and the city's fencing academy (see A.J. van der Aa, Aardrijkskundig woordenboek der Nederlanden, Gorinchem, 1839, I, p. 182).
