Gregorius de Coninck, Still Life with Fruit, Silver Plate and a Glass Goblet

      Est: €20,000 - €30,000

Works by Gregorius de Coninck are extremely rare today and we also have very little information regarding the life of this painter, who probably came from Amsterdam. However, the works by de Coninck that have become known to date, exclusively still lifes, show an exceptional painterly quality. Fred Meijer, whom we would like to thank for attributing our still life to the artist, writes: ‘without doubt by the excellent but little-known still-life painter Gregorius de Coninck, probably from the 1660s’. The present work depicts numerous fruits, including grapes, apples, peaches and plums, on a tabletop partly covered with a carpet. Hazelnuts lie at the right end of the table, while a branch of blackberries extends beyond the tabletop towards the viewer. The fruit is accompanied by precious tableware: a gleaming silver plate that reflects the fruit on it and a glass goblet that stands out against the deep dark background, mainly due to the reflections of light. Gregorius de Coninck was probably born in Amsterdam, where he seems to have lived between 1669 and 1677. He had probably already spent time in Antwerp before that, as he is listed as a member of the Guild of St Luke there from 1665 to 1666. He then travelled to Rome, where he is documented until 1668. We find his name mentioned for the last time in a promissory note that the artist signed in Antwerp in December 1680, which shows us that the painter returned there and possibly also died in the city.
