        Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Jerome Connor (1874-1943) THE SIREN bronze relief on green marble plaque; (unique) with artist's name and title on marble plaque h:14.75  w:10.50 d:2.75 in. Born in Co. Kerry, Jerome Connor emigrated from Ireland in 1888, settling with his family in America. He learned the skills of stone carving and bronze casting at a young age and worked for a time for a monument company in Springfield, Massachusetts. While in America he was responsible for a number of major public commissions including the Spanish American War Memorial at Springfield and a standing portrait of Robert Emmet for the Smithsonian Institute, a copy of which now stands in St Stephen’s Green, Dublin. In 1925 he returned to Ireland after receiving a commission to create the Lusitania Peace Memorial at Cobh, a project which occupied him for many years. In 1926 he completed a bronze bust of George Russell which he cast, chased and patinated himself making it the first bronze statue ever fully completed in Ireland. During this period he exhibited several times at the RHA and at RA in London. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at the 1943 Irish Exhibition of Living Art and in 1993 the National Gallery of Ireland had a commemorative exhibition.

Dublin Exhibited: RHA Annual Exhibition, Dublin, 1941, Cat. No. 386 Literature: Máirín Allen, Jerome Connor-Two, Capuchin Annual 1964, pp353-69 (illustration p367) The identity of the sitter is unknown but she bears a strong resemblance to the model (identity also unknown), for the Éire memorial, executed in 1932 and now in Merrion Square Park, Dublin. Its format and treatment suggest a date of c.1938. Though the modelling is succinct, the piece, texturally, begins to display the granular character of Connor's later work.

Dublin Exhibited: Irish Art from Private Collections 1870-1930, Wexford Arts Centre, 1977, Cat. No. 5 A very late example of Connor's work, in formal terms this is one of his most 'abstract' pieces. Though obviously figurative, Connor is concerned less with the definition of the man's physiognomy and form than he is with overall texture and surface pattern. The treatment of this piece emphasises its sheer physical presence. Connor's familiarity with Epstein's work is particularly relevant in this instance.

Statia prepared his meals, tidied his house and sometimes posed for him and it was she who was Connor's final model for the Angel of Peace which surmounted the Lusitania Memorial. Connor felt something of a father figure to her and even went so far as to ask his solicitor to arrange some sort of formal adoption. She stayed with him until her marriage.

It was cast for Mr John P Reihill because of his connection with the coal-importing business. Compared with Connor's earlier work there is a looseness of touch in the handling of the clay which results in a far greater degree of expression.

As a young man Connor was very athletic and during his youth, perhaps aided by the fact that his hands were unusually large, he achieved renown as a prize boxer, a sport in which he maintained an interest throughout his life. Even in his mature years he kept a punch ball for practice to keep himself fit and could be called upon when required to keep order in the Palace Bar.

Jerome Connor ranks among the major Irish sculptors of the first half of this century, along with Andrew O'Connor, John Hughes and Oliver Sheppard. Born near Annascaul, Co. Kerry, in 1874, Connor was thirteen when the family emigrated to Massachusetts. Shortly after their arrival his father died so Connor left home to seek work, beginning first in New York where he found employment as a sign-painter, a machinist and then as a stone-cutter for a monument company in Massachusetts, where he worked on the South Hadley Civil War Memorial. During this time he made additional money as a prizefighter under the name of Patrick J. O'Connor. He also trained as a bronze-founder and assisted Roland Hinton Perry (1870-1941), in the casting of The Fountain of Neptune bronzes for the Library of Congress, Washington DC, all before he was twenty-one years old. Having worked for a period at the Roycroft Institution, East Aurora, New York, where he produced commercial terracotta busts. Connor graduated to ''high'' art via portraiture, producing Civil War memorials and various monuments. His Irish-American connections brought him the Robert Emmet commission, and later, the Lusitania Memorial commission, funded by the Lusitania Peace Memorial committee and to be sited at Cobh. He was also commissioned to carry out a full length statue of Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycroft Institution and personal friend of Connor's who died in the sinking of the Lusitania. On the strength of these two commissions he returned to Ireland in 1925, taking a studio on the North Circular Road in Dublin. However, the designs for the Lusitania Memorial were frequently changed, although whether the decision of change came from the Lusitania committee or the sculptor himself is unclear. Conceived of as a symbolic appeal for world peace, the Memorial was to occupy Connor for nearly eight years, from 1929-1936, and although he had produced several designs, plans, scale models and some full-size symbolic figures it remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1943. (The monument was not finally completed until 1968). Connor undertook other commissions including a memorial for Tralee entitled The Pikeman, to commemorate the 1798 Rising, and a figure of 'Éire', for the Killarney Poets Society in commemoration of Gaelic poets of 18th century Kerry. He also entered designs for a national coinage, became friendly with W.B. Yeats and A.E. and exhibited in London where his work was positively reviewed by leading critics. At the same time he kept up his links with America, going back there regularly, (his wife and daughter had returned there c.1934). In 1939 Connor was declared bankrupt; he lost possession of his studio and the war cut him off from his family in America. From this time until his death Connor exhibited in Dublin a remarkable series of small bronzes which he described as ''little pieces of free work'', more loosely handled in their use of clay than his earlier output. They are of particular importance as they are the product of a talent which first introduced the processes of casting, chasing and patinating of bronze to Ireland.

Kerry but in 1874 when Connor was only thirteen the family emigrated to Massachusetts,U.S.A.. Shortly after their arrival his Father died and he had to leave home to seek work. He moved through various jobs including being a prize fighter before being trained as a bronze founder and he assisted Roland Hinton Perry in casting of ''The Fountain of Neptune'' bronzes for the Library of Congress. He worked for a period with the Roycroft institution and when his friend and patron Elbert Hubbard its founder died on the Lusitania he was commissioned to do a full sized statue of him. His Irish-American connections brought him the Robert Emmett commission and later the Lusitania Memorial commission which were to see him return to Ireland in 1925. They are of particular importance as they are the product of talent which first introduced the process of casting, chasing and patinating of bronze to Ireland. ''The Pikeman'' is Connor's second design for the unrealized 1798 Memorial ''Pikeman'' intended for Denny Street, Tralee,Co Kerry where it was to replace a stone figure destroyed by the British Forces during the Irish War of Independence. The contrast between this design and the earlier one of 1928 - 31 illustrates Connor's move from formal clarity and academic pose to a more expressive approach achieved through rugged modeling ,simplicity of pose and defiant expression. We acknowledge Christina Kennedy's private research and writings which formed the basis of this catalogue entry.

        Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Jerome Connor (1874-1943) The Siren or The Street Singer, c1936-39 Bronze on green marble, 17.5cm (6.75") Inclusive of base Base signed CONNOR Provenance: The Kinlen Collection Among the most popular of Connor's bronzes during his years in Ireland, were the busts and heads variously called The Siren, The Dancer and The Street Singer, all selections from the same figure study, a one-third life size female nude seated on shelving rock, her head turned in the act of singing. The original plaster Siren was painted to simulate bronze, probably for display at the Royal Academy, where Connor exhibited until dissuaded from doing so by high British duties on Irish imports after 1932. In the event, neither Siren nor its complement, another painted plaster, the male nude Boxer, was exhibited. With a base derived from that of his 1929 Hubbard memorial, Siren probably dates to 1932-33 or a little later, and may be an individual portrait of a singer or dancer of the sculptor's circle. Connor cast a Siren relief, a first (1938) Siren bust, a more elegant second bust called The Street Singer or The Dancer, and finally a shawled Street Singer head, each edition marking a shift in presentation in response to his Irish clientele. The late bronzes, like the Hugh Lane Gallery's example (reg. no. 1113), datable from its very fluid modelling to c1941, show the head entirely re-imagined as that of an Irish folk singer: tightly shawled, mounted informally on an irregular block of Dublin calp limestone, and titled Street Singer in Gaelic lettering. In contrast, the present head, faithful to the original Siren concept, lacks these later features and may be as early as the mid 1930s. It was cast, from a specific plaster in his North Circular Road studio, at the latest in early 1939. Giollamuire Ó Murchú

Jerome Connor (1874-1943) Bust of Elbert Hubbard, c1929 Bronze on pink marble Base signed JEROME CONNOR Provenance: from the collection of the late Mr Justice Dermot Kinlen Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), author, Arts and Crafts promoter across the United States, and founder of the Roycroft community of artists and craft workers at East Aurora NY, was, after millionaire Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, perhaps the best known American victim of the Lusitania sinking in May 1915. Later, his son Elbert Hubbard II, together with William and Gertrude Vanderbilt (Mrs Harry Payne Whitney) for that family, Franklin D Roosevelt and others, decided to honour the victims and their rescuers, and promote world peace, by erecting a Lusitania Peace Memorial in Cobh, county Cork. At the same time, Roycrofters across America proposed a Hubbard memorial for their East Aurora campus. Connor was given both commissions. He and his wife Anne, both Roycrofters, knew the Hubbards well, and when at East Aurora in 1899-1902 Connor had made several portraits of Hubbard and his family. The monument, a heroic bronze, showing Hubbard in bohemian attire seated informally on a rock, was completed in Dublin in 1929, and unveiled in East Aurora in June 1930. Two smaller studies survive, a larger 1930 studio plaster, now in the National Gallery of Ireland (inventory no. 8348, also cast in bronze for the Jerome Connor Trust), and this unique small scale bust. The two differ in some costume detail, but both show the same pose of the head, matching that of the East Aurora statue. Giollamuire Ó Murchú €2000-4000

Jerome Connor (1874-1943) Bust of Eamon De Valera, c1920 Bronze on green marble Base inscribed 1920, signed Jerome Connor Provenance: from the collection of the late Mr Justice Dermot Kinlen There are two Connor studies of Eamon de Valera. At the 1937 RHA, he exhibited a life size head and neck study. The National Gallery of Ireland has a modern bronze of this, inventory no. 8053. The second design, a bust, is known only from small scale examples, including the present piece, possibly cast for the Irish market c1937. Both designs date from a portrait sitting during de Valera's 1919-20 American tour in support of Irish independence. De Valera's own recollection was that this was at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, the Irish mission's headquarters. As Connor exhibited The Honorable Eamon de Valera, Portrait Bust at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1921, the sitting was probably late in 1920. While these portraits are a unique record, depicting de Valera at 37, then the undisputed leader of an (as yet unrecognized) Irish Republic, Connor's links with advanced nationalism predate this episode. He had already designed a Robert Emmet statue, a bronze of which was presented in 1917 to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, 'President Wilson attending'. Joseph McGarrity of the Emmet committee was in 1919-20 also a close de Valera aide, and in July 1919, soon after his arrival, de Valera travelled to San Francisco to unveil a second Connor Emmet before some 80,000 people. It was probably McGarrity who arranged the later portrait sitting. Giollamuire Ó Murchú €8000-12000
