      Thurloe Conolly (Ireland 1918-2016) Painting. Title - Zoological Garden. Mixed media on masonite. Signed Thurloe Conolly on back with title and dated February 1950. There is also an old Boston buyers label made to Mrs Joseph Auerbach, wife of the distinguished Boston attorney Painting measures 18.4 inches high, 24.3 inches wide. Frame measures 23.3 inches high, 29.3 inches wide. In good condition. From Askart: Thurloe Connolly was born in Cork. He worked in an office from leaving school until 1941, spending his spare time painting and writing poetry. Once he began painting full time his work was exhibited widely: in 1943 at the IELA, at the 1944 Exhibition of Subjective Art in Dublin, and in 1945 at the first show in the Dublin Painters Gallery. He had a one man show at Victor Waddington's Gallery in 1949, and a series of exhibitions in America including Boston and New York, as well as in England, Holland and Sweden. A major retrospective was held in Dublin in 1993. Initially his work was figurative and romantic but a change of direction in 1948 showed a growing interest in pattern and abstraction. His influences were eclectic, from Klee and graffiti, to Oceanic and African art. His works from 1952 and 1953 were purely abstract, all titled Painting.

      Thurloe Conolly (b.1918) Untitled oil on board signed lower right h:90.50  w:91.50 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Thurloe Conolly was born in Cork in 1918. A member of the White Stag Group, founded in London in 1935 which moved to Ireland in 1939 where they stayed until after the Second World War. Conolly's paintings were exhibited widely, at the IELA in 1943, at the Exhibition of Subjective Art 1944 in Dublin, and in 1945 he had his first show in the Dublin Painters Gallery. Conolly also had a one man show at Victor Waddington's Gallery in 1949, and a series of exhibitions in America including Boston and New York, as well as in England, Holland and Sweden. A major retrospective was held in Dublin in 1993. His work initially was figurative and romantic but by the late 1940's his work became more abstract.

During World War II, Plaut directed the Art Looting Investigation Unit for the United States Government, the group known as the "Monuments Men."
