Cassius Marcellus Coolidge Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1844 - d. 1934

Artist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was born in 1844 near Antwerp, New York. He established its first bank and newspaper, bought and sold two drug stores, became a school superintendent, served as town clerk, and was a travel writer. Though he took private art lessons, he was mostly self-taught, illustrating books and advertisements. Before creating his popular paintings, he invented comic foregrounds, the cartoon, carnival cut-outs tourists put their faces in for souvenir photographs.

When Brown and Bigelow hired artist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge in 1903 to produce oil paintings for advertisements, calendars, and promotional prints, his series Dogs Playing Poker was born. Its popularity led to the artist offering C.M. Coolidge paintings for sale. Though their commercial origins landed them in the critical realm of low-brow art, recent critics argue that the series of C.M. Cooldige original prints satirizes upper-class America's excesses and attitudes. Build an art collection to hand down to future generations, and browse the online galleries of striking oil paintings for sale.

COOLIDGE, CASSIUS M.[ARCELLUS] King Galliniper. A comic opera in three acts.

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

COOLIDGE, CASSIUS M.[ARCELLUS] King Galliniper. A comic opera in three acts. New York: C.M. Coolidge, 1890. Mounted text (from the original libretto) accompanied with original watercolor illustrations by Coolidge, for an illustrated edition that was never published. Original hand-lettered boards, leather-backed. 10 1/2 x 16 3/4 inches (17 x 43 cm). 18 ff. (including section titles), bristol board on guards. The cheap binding (possibly from a sketchbook) is quite worn, with some separation on the joints and hinges. A few leaves have bumped or chipped corners, not affecting Coolidge's designs. The illustrations are extremely witty and of exceptional quality, with superb draftsmanship. This is quite possibly the only opera ever written on mosquito eradication. Sold with the original 148 page manuscript musical score, printed libretto (in two forms), a photograph of the original cast, and the original typescript with hand drawn cover by Coolidge. Cassius Marcellus Coolidge ("Cash"), was a prodigiously inventive and ingenious American artist. He was an accomplished cartoonist, and was the originator (see next lot) of the life-sized boardwalk cutouts for photographers. In 1903 he contracted with the advertising firm of Brown and Bigelow to create 16 oil paintings of dogs in various human-like situations. Among these scenes were the first of the "Dogs playing Poker" genre. Provenance: Marcella Coolidge, daughter of the artist, by descent from the estate of the artist.

American, 1844-1934 A BOLD BLUFF and WATERLOO: TWO Each signed CM Coolidge (ll) Oils on canvas Each 24 x 34 inches Provenance: Collection of William Zeckendorf, Sr. Private Collection, Connecticut Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was a man of many talents who, over his long lifetime was a banker, shopkeeper, inventor and painter - he even penned an opera. However, he is certainly best known to generations of Americans for his paintings of dogs playing poker. In 1903 Coolidge was commissioned to produce 16 paintings for the advertising firm of Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota. The majority of these works depicted dogs performing many very human activities, chiefly playing poker. The present works display a distinct pair. The sequential narrative follows the same 'players' in the course of a hand of poker. In the first, our main character, the St. Bernard holds a weak hand as the rest of the crew maintains their best poker faces. In the following scene, we see the St. Bernard raking in the large pot, much to the very obvious dismay of his fellow players. Apparently, Coolidge originally titled the two Judge St. Bernard Stand Pat on Nothing and Judge St. Bernard Wins on a Bluff1. They were most likely re-titled A Bold Bluff and Waterloo for convenience by Brown & Bigelow, who then mass marketed the images. Although his name is not commonly remembered today, Coolidge's images seem permanently seared into the American public conscience. They are among our most important and endearing images of American popular culture and stand beside the icons of other illustrators such as Rockwell, Flagg and Wyeth. We are grateful to 1Garner Fredrickson and his forthcoming publication, Poker dogs: The Life and Work of C.M. Coolidge, and Joseph Richey's Web site, dogsplayingpoker.org, for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.
