Check $10. Cooperstown, 15.1.1849.

James Fenimore Cooper ALS Renting Family Manor After Publishing "The Deerslayer"

          Est: $300 - $400

James Fenimore Cooper Cooperstown, NY, July 6, 1841 James Fenimore Cooper ALS Renting Family Manor After Publishing "The Deerslayer" ALS An autograph letter signed by author James Fenimore Cooper. 1p, measuring 8" x 10", Cooperstown, dated July 6, 1841. Signed "J. Fenimore Cooper" and addressed to M. C. Patterson. Cooper makes arrangements for renting a house out to guests. Reverse of second integral page bears an address panel in Cooper's hand, as well as a couple of docketing notations, presumably by the recipient In very good condition, with a few small separations along intersecting folds, a few spots of light toning, and paper loss to second integral page. Boldly signed. In part: "Your friends and yourself can be accommodated on the following terms. A private parlour, pretty well furnished &c, and quite well situated, good enough bedroom, a separate plain table at your own hour, and a respectable, new, quiet tavern agreeably placed for $6 a week each, for grown persons, and half price for servants and children. Children under five three for one. The home is at my gate, has a piazze on two sides, alone on a cliff, and is as good as can be generally formed. There are about a dozen regular boarders who breakfast at 7, dine at 1 and take tea at 6. I can tell you no more of the house, than that it has been badly kept; has changed hands this summer with a view to improvements. It is in ambitious hands, and may do not well enough, but all this I knew nothing. We have an exceedingly healthy and cool country; pleasant rides and drives, a lake, excellent water, ice, and no fruits, but apples and the smaller kinds. Chickens will soon abound. I have wine, but whether there is any in the tavern, I never looked. We have two rotten egg springs within fifteen miles of us. Let me know your decision, as the landlord may not wish to keep his room." James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was an American writer known for his historical romances depicting colonist and Indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries. As a young man, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy as a midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. His most famous work, and often regarded as his masterpiece, is the romantic novel "The Last of the Mohicans". Cooper had recently renovated the family manor located in Cooperstown in 1834 and owned it until his death. The same year as sending this letter, Cooper published his final Leatherstocking's tale, "The Deerslayer.." This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. Autograph letter signed, by James Fenimore Cooper. [likely Switzerland, ca. 1828.] 8" x 6.5". Ink on wove. Accompanied by 19th c. portrait of Cooper. ************* Cooper speaks mostly of the recent financial crisis (presumably the Panic of 1825), "Twelve months hence the scenes of the present day will be looked at like a field of battle that has not yet quite gotten clear of its bones." It is possible that this leaf may have been part of a book or journal, as Cooper apologizes for "having written this letter on the wrong page." Near the end of the letter, Cooper writes, "Should curiosity ever draw you in the direction of Megave, you will pass at no great distance from this place, and I should be glad to see you in our mountains." Cooper and his family spent 4 months in Berne, Switzerland in 1828.

Cooper James 1789 - 1851 James Fenimore Cooper endorsed check, PSA/DNA slabbed Check No. 712 issued from Cooperstown, NY on April 21, 1842 in the amount of 10 Dollars payable to bearer signed "J. Fenimore Cooper." The check was issued from the Otsego County Bank cashier and bears a "PAID, Otsego Cty. Bank" red stamp at center. A later pencil inscription runs partly along the top. The partly printed and handwritten check is decorated by looping braid along the left edge and an eagle bearing an olive branch at upper left, measuring 5.75" x 2.125". The check is enclosed in a PSA/DNA certified slab measuring 9.5" x 4.5". James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), is widely recognized as America's first major novelist. His father William helped found the settlement in upstate New York that now bears his name, the same "Cooperstown" that also appears on our check. By all accounts, Cooper was a bright and vivacious young scholar. He attended Yale University prior to his expulsion for a prank. After serving as a navy midshipman, Cooper married and enjoyed a level of financial independence that allowed him to pursue leisure activities, including writing. Initially, Cooper modeled his works directly on or in opposition to acknowledged British novelists like Sir Walter Scott and Jane Austen. Yet as he gained in confidence, Cooper began to explore aspects of the newly forged American identity, including character types, settings, and situations. His "Leatherstocking Tales", a series of five novels that span the lifetime of their hero, Hawkeye, or Natty Bumppo, were released over a twenty-year period, between 1823 and 1841. In these works, Cooper examined the concepts of the frontier, progress, and the "noble savage". This check, issued one year after the publication of the last "Leatherstocking Tale", The Deer Slayer, may represent a royalty check to the author.
