      Hendrik Frans de Cort 1742 Antwerpen – 1810 London Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Framed in a high-quality partly gilded frame. Öl auf Leinwand. Unsigniert. In einer hochwertigen Modellleiste mit vergoldeter Sichtleiste gerahmt. Ein motiv- und formatgleiches Gemälde de Corts befindet sich im Kunsthistorischen Museum in Wien (Inv.-Nr. Gemäldegalerie, 467, Öl auf Kupfer, signiert, datiert, ortsbezeichnet). Jenes Werk ist vom Künstler signiert und datiert und war ursprünglich im Besitz von Herzog Carl von Lothringen in Brüssel. Das abgebildete Schloss Temsch, vor dem 12. Jahrhundert südwestlich von Antwerpen errichtet, wurde nur acht Jahre nach Anfertigung des Gemäldes abgerissen und durch ein neues Schloss im klassizistischen Stil ersetzt. Auch wurde das Schloss von P.C.P. Colin dargestellt, jedoch unterscheidet sich die hintergründige Landschaft dort deutlich von de Corts Werk. Hendrik Frans de Cort 1742 Antwerpen – 1810 London Flämischer Landschaftsmaler. 1770 Einschreibung in der St.-Lukas-Gilde in Antwerpen. Ab 1774 Hofmaler von Maximilian Franz von Österreich. Ab 1776 assoziiertes Mitglied der Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris und Hofmaler des Prince de Condé. 1782 Rückkehr nach Antwerpen. Gründung der Künstlergruppe "Genootschap ter aanmoediging der Schoone Kunsten", unter anderem mit Balthasar Paul Ommeganck. Nach der Brabanter Revolution verließ er Flandern im Jahr 1789, um sich in London niederzulassen.

      Hendrik Frans De Cort Anvers, 1742 - Londres, 1810 Vue du Mont Saint-Michel depuis Avranches Toile 'A VIEW OF MONT SAINT-MICHEL FROM AVRANCHES', OIL ON CANVAS, BY HENDRIK FRANZ DE CORT h: 44,50 w: 55,50 cm Commentaire : Hendrik de Cort, peintre dessinateur de paysages s'est formé à Anvers auprès d'Antonissen et Herreins. Parti pour Paris en 1776, il travaille pour le prince de Condé qui lui commande plusieurs vues pour le château de Chantilly. Cette vue du Mont Saint-Michel est certainement peinte lors de son premier séjour en France, avant la Révolution qui chasse les moines et vide l'abbaye en 1791. Une partie de l'abbaye est alors prison d'Etat : de 1685 à 1789 sont mentionnés 147 détenus. Si leur surveillance assure quelques revenus aux religieux, ce sont les pèlerins qui animent le site. On en voit ici un groupe, pieds nus et pantalons retroussés, en procession derrière un curé en soutane qui, profitant de la marée basse, les mène à travers les grèves. Après avoir traversé la baie et fait le tour des autels pour vénérer les reliques de saint Aubert et saint Michel ils rapporteront une figurine de l'archange terrassant le dragon ou une fiole de sable. Depuis le XIe siècle une cloche de l'abbaye veille sur eux: en cas de brouillard, elle sonne pour guider pèlerins et pêcheurs des villages environnants. Le plus ancien pèlerin connu est un moine qui au retour d'un périple passant par le Mont-Gargan, sanctuaire des Pouilles également dédié à Saint-Michel, Jérusalem et Rome, se rendit au Mont vers 867-868. Très vite celui-ci est donc associé à ces deux grands centres de pèlerinage. En 966, des moines s'y installent et encouragent la dévotion à l'archange, tant et si bien qu'il faut envisager dès le début du XIe siècle la construction d'une grande église sur le rocher. Hendrik Frans de Cort a également peint une Vue du Mont Saint-Michel depuis Marazion (Vente Londres, Sotheby's, 7 juillet 1982, panneau, 87 x 118 cm, lot 51, repr.).
