    EDWARD HODGES CREE 1814-1901 FIGURES AND GUINEA FOWL IN A WOODLAND; A DISTANT VIEW OF THE CITADEL, CORFU two, both signed l.r.: E.H.Cree/1861 watercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour and stopping out Quantity: 2 CATALOGUE NOTE Edward Hodges Cree served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy between 1837 and 1869. His last seagoing appointment was in 1861 aboard the H.M.S.Orion. In June 1861 the ship was noted as being somewhere around the Ionian Islands where Cree drew the present watercolours. He retired from service later that year

(26.6 x 40.6cm.) a pair (2) LITERATURE The Cree Journals, published 1981, illustrated on front cover and p.198/199. NOTES Edward H. Cree was a Surgeon, Royal Navy, 1837-61 and served off China during the first Opium War of 1839-42. He also served off the China coast pursuing pirates during the late 1840's. There is a similar version of the former of these watercolours in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. This lot is sold with a copy of The Cree Journals, edited by Michael Levien, published 1981.
