          FORRESTER, ALFRED HENRY. 1804-1872. A Good Natured Hint about California by Alfred Crowquill. [London]: D. Bogue, [1849]. Oblong 12mo (122 x 210 mm). Single sheet folded into 8 accordion lithographed leaves with a total of 35 illustrated panels on rectos with text beneath. Original lithographed front cardstock wrapper, modern back wrapper. Custom chemise and slipcase. Accordion format professionally reassembled, light soiling and a few marginal repairs with resultant slight discoloration to margins of last two plates. A humorous look at the gold rush from a founder of Punch, writing under his pseudonym Alfred Crowquill. In a series of 35 illustrated panels we follow the Englishman Mivins who, dreaming of adventure, sails to California to seek his fortune in the gold fields, finds nothing but misfortune, and finally makes his way back home to the arms of his mother. ABPC records only 4 copies (including the present copy) at auction since 1981. Cowan II p 218; Howes F268.

          [ILLUSTRATION ART] "CROWQUILL, ALFRED" (1804-1872). Original watercolor on gray paper, traces of graphite outlining the extent of the drawing, ruled in ink on three sides, signed (l.l.) as Alfred Crowquill. 13 3/8 (to arched top of drawing) x 10 1/2 inches (34 x 17 cm). Lower edge of sheet folded over, not affecting the drawing, some age toning, drawing generally in very nice condition.. A highly unusual fantasy drawing depicting a winged girl afloat in a curious nautilus shell vessel, apparently in the English Channel (the cliffs of Dover appear in the distance). Alfred Henry Forrester (early on in conjunction with his brother, Charles Robert Forrester), illustrated many children's books and works of caricature.
