Greg Curnoe (1936 – 1992), Proposal #1, Arts Against Repression

          Est: $5,000 - $7,000

In 1967, Canadian artist, Greg Curnoe was commissioned to complete a massive mural as part of a program to “decorate” airports across Canada. It was commissioned for the international arrivals tunnel at Montreal International Airport in Dorval, Quebec. When installation of the work began on March 20, 1968, complaints from the RCMP and airport personnel about the content ensued almost immediately. Officials claimed Curnoe's mural was rife with critical stances against American imperialism, both cultural and economic, and airport officials expressed doubts that international visitors would be amused by Curnoe's political puns. After four days of discussion the jury recommended the mural be removed and stored at the National Gallery of Canada. Curnoe was angered by the censorship and became involved in "Arts Against Repression", a documentary that looked at censored and suppressed Canadian works in a number of different disciplines as a public way to protest the censorship. Proposal #1 is handwritten in the lower right corner of the image indicating it is perhaps a mock-up for a poster or larger work. The writing that has been censored by the large black-out lines reads, "THE FOLLOWING IS (A) STATEMENT REGARDING A MURAL I HAD EXECUTED & INSTA(LLED)".

At the centre of this group was the artist Greg Curnoe (1936-1992) whose voice helped to spark and ultimately shape the grassroots movement of artist run galleries and magazines. The London Regionalists subverted the trope and condemnation of “provincialism” by embracing and exploring their own peripheral position and perspective. Rather than simply picturing the local landscape around them, the London Regionalists were committed to experimentation and creating new forms of artistic production based primarily on the experience of their local surroundings and the city’s burgeoning sense of collectivism. Such experimentation can be seen in Return from Ottawa #5, a colourful collage that overlays a diary entry, a shoe store postal address and a Maclean’s magazine headline “The New Birth Control”. The piece was featured in the film R34 by another founding member of the London Regionalists, Jack Chambers, wherein he juxtaposes Curnoe’s work with his daily routines. R34 has been praised by the legendary filmmaker Stan Brakhage as: “the greatest film on the creative process I’ve yet seen”. Drawing inspiration from the Dada and nihilists movements of the early 20th century, this work blends a heightened political moment in Canadian history with Curnoe’s own quotidian experience. Curnoe was committed to documenting the ephemera of his daily lived experience, and this work can be read as just that, everything he encountered on his return from Ottawa; however his use of Dada-style collage motifs and birth control headline, which was not yet legalized in Canada in 1964, hint at his more activist and politically charged inclinations. It was so natural for me to associate type and text with a picture."In the last body of work produced by Greg Curnoe, the multi-disciplinary artist focused primarily on self-portraits and stamped, lettered work. Known primarily for his colourful paintings, prints and drawings reminiscent of the Pop Art movement, the work of Curnoe always depended on subject and narrative. 54 (1990), created two years before the artist's death in 1992, is an ink on paper composition within an artist-made aluminum frame. This direction taken by Curnoe in his later life helps document his commitment to the London, Ontario arts community where he celebrated contemporary art and initiated the creative movement known as "London Regionalism".Greg Curnoe attended the Doon School of Fine Arts in Kitchener (Ontario) before attending the Ontario College of Art from 1957-1960. In 1961 Curnoe returned to London, Ontario, where he co-founded Region Magazine and the Region Art Gallery. His career flourished in the late 1960s, as he was chosen to represent Canada at the Sao Paulo Bienal in 1969 and at the Venice Biennale in 1976.

Using a warm, vibrant palette, Curnoe captures a Shakespearean actor in a style reminiscent of Matisse's Fauvist portraits. "Curnoe's art was about momentary experience, about pausing to look at something or someone," and he tended to spontaneously create forms rather than employ a methodic rigour to his work. Alongside his collages and lettered works, Curnoe's portraits were always autobiographical and marked important relationships that the artist made throughout his life.

Their contours are very important; they impose a definite limit on this disorder. The pieces of paper take the form of a circle, a square, a rectangle, even a profile (of the artist's father, for instance) or the outline of ears, lips and eyes." As with his early assemblages, Greg Curnoe's Return from Montreal is a scene of disorder roped in. Two blue painted circles feature prominently atop a collage of orderly scraps and fragments: Late Forms for school children stating "Punctuality is essential to success," an evangelical pamphlet, the artist's 1963 Chauffeur's License, and a centre streak of repetitious spoonfuls of mandarin oranges. Within the blue, Curnoe's signature block lettering stamps out both the title of the work, "Return from Montreal Number Five Losing It -," and lyrics from the 1963 Beatles song, Not a Second Time: "You know you made me cry / I see no use in wonderin."

Rediscovering a passion for cycling in the early seventies, Christopher Dewdney remarks how Greg was able to "fuse three separate interests into one: racing machines, personal participation in physically demanding competitive sport, and painting." "Silva Disc Wheel" underscores Curnoe's incredible passion for cycling that remained with the artist until his death in 1992, which occurred during a Saturday morning ride with the London Centennial Wheelers.Sarah Milroy writes how Curnoe had "described bicycles as a form of functional collage; through a limitless refining of the component parts, the cycle aficionado could produce a lighter and lighter machine." "Silva Disc Wheel" was given by Curnoe to the owner of a Toronto bicycle shop in exchange for his very own clear anodized Silva disc wheel.

Greg Curnoe, Interview with Artviews [Fred Gaysek] about the I Tell Stories exhibition, December 1987. Note: In an article discussing Wynick/Tuck's exhibition of Curnoe's work in 1991, Robert Fones describes that in works such as "Dessin Anime", "the rubber-stamp letters used [are] resurrected from Curnoe's work of the 1960s, [and] have a close affinity with printing type...Black ink is applied to reversed type and an impression made on paper. As a result, these texts convey literary content more effectively than Curnoe's painted letter works." Sarah Milroy also references the artist's return to large-format stamp works, which were "made with the same custom set he had used in his earlier lettered works for Sao Paulo." Curnoe had exhibited a fantastic array of lettered canvases at the 1969 X Bienial in Brazil. Milroy notes that in the 1980s "the old magic, it seems, was still in [the stamps]." "Dessin Anime" is a list of twelve cartoon character names, aligned flush left on thickly painted Harumi paper. Here, Curnoe proves his mastery of media, experimenting with watercolour, stamp pad ink, gouache, pastel and pencil crayon. He uses these media on a grand scale typically reserved for works on canvas. Four dates in 1987 inscribed in pencil suggest that the artist returned to "Dessin Anime" on four separate occasions, reworking his composition. Atop the stamped letters, Curnoe writes the names of animators of each of the cartoons, listing such notables as Herce, Tex Avery and Ub Iwerks (creator of Mickey Mouse). David McFadden recalled that his friend Curnoe, "liked film noir and Louise Brooks and animated cartoons from the forties, particularly Daffy Duck...[Greg] was always making lists...lists of things he liked." A second work in this series now housed at the Art Gallery of Ontario is "A List of Directors & Dubs" (1987); it includes twelve film director names, many working in the film noir genre. A third work in this series entitled "Before Marks" (1987) lists twelve pigment names, the title referring to the completion of the work before blue paint marks were streaked across the surface of the paper. His list cleverly examines the origins of pigments, with small blue handwritten text that highlights their main ingredients or personal associations for the artist. Greg Curnoe commented on this 1987 series, noting the viewer's double process of reading and seeing: "I was brought up on comic books and children books with captions. It was so natural for me to associate type and text with a picture...By using a stamp set of big letters and also by using a sans serif typeface, I have made the text awkward to read...The letter's stick out, they don't disappear. It makes you look and read at the same time. You can't just take it in, partly because the letters are very large..." "Dessin Anime" underscores Curnoe's signature translation of the commonplace into the extraordinary. He painted the details of his environment, revealing his personal history and impassioned belief in the inseparability of life and art.

Private Collection, Toronto. Literature: Pierre Theberge, Greg Curnoe Retrospective, catalogue, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts / National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 1982, page 114 and page 186, no.152, illustrated (collection of the National Gallery of Canada). Douglas Fetherling, "The Curnoe Story", Canadian Art magazine, Volume 10, Number 2, Summer/June 1993, pages 28-39 for an article written shortly after the artist's fatal accident. Note: Executed December 1978-April 1979. Curnoe was an avid cyclist and chose to go to his personal experiences when he portrayed his preferred means of locomotion, the Mariposa bicycle. Tragically, he was killed on November 14th, 1992 while on a ride with a local cycling club, the London Centennial Wheelers. Fetherling, in his article, writes that images of the Mariposa bike became so famous that London painter, John Boyle, remembers seeing images of the Mariposa bike "hanging in restaurants in Scandinavia and hearing them praised in Germany and France." This work was printed by Editions Canada, London by master printers Rudolf Bikkers, Gilbert Moll and Lucy Thorel. A total of 18 colours (screens) was used in the production of this series.

The block letters are somewhat veiled by yellow and green pigments which create a screen over the text. Through a story composed of fragments, the artist reveals the sentiments of those closest to him, providing the viewer with a fascinating window into his world.

GREGORY RICHARD CURNOE, JUDITH, 1964, oil on board. 49 ins x 36 ins; 122.5 cms x 90 cms. Provenance: The Isaacs Gallery Ltd., Toronto. Literature: Charles C. Hill and Pierre B. Landry, Canadian Art: Catalogue of the National Gallery of Canada, Volume One, Ottawa, 1988, page 238 for a similar semi-figural work entitled Diane Stretching, 1963, accession no.15749. Note: © Estate of Gregory Richard Curnoe / SODRAC 2011. By 1964, Curnoe's artwork had attracted much attention, having been featured in exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Isaacs Gallery, the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Gallery Moos and Galerie Agnes Lefort. In his London studio, the artist experimented in mixed media, often painting large, bright oils on plywood then applying stamped numbers and lettering as seen in Judith. True to Curnoe's belief in the inseparable nature of art and life, many of his semi-figural compositions were depictions of family and close friends. Here, his model, most likely a character from the artist's life narrative, reclines in abstract space, her presence defined by the porcelain white contrast of her figure with a bold orange surround. Judith attests to Curnoe's virtuoso command of colour and form.
