            Aug. 25, 2021

            ROBERT DANIEL JOHNSTON

            Est: $300 - $500

(1837-1919) Confederate general who commanded troops at the Battle of Seven Pines, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania. Uncommon war-dated manuscript D.S., 7pp. on two sets of lightly-lined adjoining sheets, 8 x 12.5 in., October 30, 1864. A lengthy report of detailed men of Johnston's brigades. The roll is separated by name, company, regiment, where the men were detailed and by what authority, whether they were able or disabled, and the disposition made. Roll lists 191 names, including 'Wofford's Brigade,' and the 5th North Carolina. Names listed under the authority column include 'Gen'l Lee,' 'Sec. of War,' 'General Johnston,' and 'Maj. Gen Jones.' Signed at the top of the final page, 'Respectfully submitted, Robt. D. Johnston, Brig Genl.' Conclusion of the document bears an endorsement signed by Acting Inspector L. T. Everett. In fine condition, with a single ink line through all of Johnston's writing (which remains completely legible) partial separations along hinges, and some mild toning along folds.

            DANIEL M. GREGG

            Est: $200 - $300

(1833 - 1916) Union brigadier general of cavalry who served with distinction at Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Brandy Station. Resigned from the army before the war's end for personal reasons. Trimmed war date A.L.S. as brigadier general, 1p. 3.5 x 5 in., 'Headquarters 2nd Div Cav Corps.', Sept 15, 1862, to Col. C.R. Smith, Chief of Staff of the Cavalry Corps., forwarding a letter. In full: '...I forward the enclosed letter from Gen. Meade which Gen. Warren forwarded to me to be sent to you. All quiet during the night. Gen Warren will send some infantry to hold the junction of the Culpepper and Madison C.H. Roads. I tried to connect during the night with Gen. Kilpatrick but could not. I have to keep three regiments north of Cedar Mountain...' Trimmed around the edges, severe ink stains to the center affecting most of the body of the letter. Writing slightly faded yet still decipherable. While the printed date on this letter is 1862, it is likely that it was written in 1863 while Gregg was chief of staff to General Alfred Pleasanton. At that time General Meade was maneuvering against Robert E. Lee along the Rappahannock River leading to the Bristoe and Mine Run campaigns.

            Jun. 15, 2021

            POL BURY (1922-2005)

            Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Ponctuation, 1965. Painted masonite panels with an electric motor. Made for Daniel Spoerri's Edition MAT Collection in an edition of 100, this edition numbered 56. Signature on label on reverse. Traces of use on the front panel. In 'Ponctuation' Pol Bury combines an attention to the qualities of continuous motion with an interest in optical perception. The object consists of a white, round plate perforated with several holes and sandwiched between two black round plates of hardboard. Three rows of holes in the surface disk allow the viewer to momentarily glimpse the white disk as it rotates slowly with the aid of a motor. The work uses continuous movement to explore the capacity of human vision; the viewer cannot process every detail of the unending flow of white points (Text source and video of moving ‘Ponctuation' (1965): https://sites.wustl.edu/multiplied/items/pol-bury/). Pol Bury made several other similar 'Ponctuations' with perforated black and white plates in different shapes from 1959 to 1967. Yet, this particular multiple in an edition of one hundred pieces received the most international attention. It was created for Daniel Spoerri’s (°1930) ‘Edition MAT’ (Multiplication d’art Transformable) exhibition which became an international phenomenon in the art world of the 1960s. Spoerri’s aim was to broaden the notion of art and its role in society by producing small-scaled, reasonably priced multiples that encouraged viewer participation through touch or optical vibration. Not only were the works of art multiplied in the sense that they were produced in editions of one hundred, but they also embodied multiplicity in that they could continually take on new forms. Marcel Duchamp’s Rotoreliefs spin to create a hypnotic illusion of spatial recession and projection; Jean Tinguely’s motor-driven constructions shake so rapidly that their forms appear to dissolve; and the pages of Dieter Roth’s unbound, hand-cut books were designed to be reshuffled by the viewer, producing an ever-changing array of abstract compositions (Text source: https://sites.wustl.edu/multiplied/introduction/). Description FR 'Ponctuation', 1965. Panneaux de masonite peints avec moteur électrique. Edition MAT/ Collection 65 à 100 exemplaires, celui-ci nr. 56. Signature sur une étiquette au revers. Traces d'usage. Beschrijving NL Ponctuation, 1965. Beschilderde masonietpanelen met elektrische motor. Editie MAT/ Collection vervaardigd in 100 exemplaren, onderhavig exemplaar nr. 56. Signatuur op etiket op verso. Gebruikssporen. Motor functioneert, draaiende schijven echter niet.
