    Oregon Missions and Travels over the Rocky Mountains in 1845-46. New York: Edward Dunigan, 1847. 8vo (168 x 100 mm). 408, [4] pp. Half-title. Additional engraved title, folding engraved map, and 13 engraved plates. Original brown cloth decorated in gilt and blind. Scattered foxing, a few pale spots to map, title and half-title toned, minor wear to extremities, spine a touch sunned. Provenance: Adare (ownership signature dated 1848). FIRST EDITION. Smet was a Jesuit missionary engaged with the Flathead tribe of the Rocky Mountains from 1840-43, and who ventured to Fort Vancouver, Oregon, in 1844. The last 4 pages feature translations of the Our Father into several Indian languages. Cowan calls this work "the best and most important of its kind." Cowan p 217; Howes D286; Sabin 82268.

Illustrated with plates from early engravings, prints and photographs; folding map loose in rear endpaper pocket of Vol. IV. 9¼x6, original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt. First Edition. New York: Francis P. Harper, 1905 Important history of this Jesuit priest who had such a profound influence during the early days of the opening of the West. Tweney calls the work "both authoritative and indispensable" and relates that De Smet "travelled assiduously, wrote voluminously, and treated the Indians with sympathy and understanding...On numerous occasions he acted as chief negotiator between the Indians and the government, and he was influential in the formation of what eventually became the national Indian policy." Tweney 8. Covers lightly rubbed, a few corners bumped; former owner's ink signature on pastedowns, offsetting to endpapers; else unopened and near fine.
