Dodge, Age 30, 19th Century, watercolor of ivory, Provenance: Christie's sale 9054 Important American Furniture, Silver, Prints, Folk Art and Decorative Arts, lot 193, Jan 15-16 1999, sold $1035, the Christie's catalogue notes that the miniature is signed, we were unable to open it to confirm, depicting a gentleman with black jacket and high collared shirt, the pendant with lock of hair on rear. Size of pendant 3 in. x 2 1/8 in. According to the Christie's footnote, 'John Wood Dodge worked as both a miniature portrait painter and dioramist in New York City during the second quarter of the 19th Century. Dodge exhibited at the National Academy and Apollo Institute between 1830 and 1844. By 1849, Dodge has travelled to New Orleans, where he exhibited a series of topographical and allegorial dioramas. He maintained his successful career as a portrait miniaturist travelling through the south during the 1850s. in 1854, he is known to have worked in Huntsville, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee.' John Wood Dodge (New York/Tennessee, 1807-1893) miniature oval watercolor portrait of Charles Thompson of Tennessee, painted 1852. The subject, who appears to be about age 30, has dark hair and blue eyes and a dark chin beard, and is depicted wearing a black suit with white shirt and black tie and a gold watch chain. Housed in an oval gold metal locket with engine turned decoration. Inscription on back: "Painted by John W. Dodge Nashville Tenn. April 1852 / Likeness of Charles Thompson". Dodge's account book contains an entry for a portrait of Charles Thompson, and also for George Torrence Thompson Jr. (Ref. Raymond White, Tennessee Historical Quarterly, Spring, 2000). Charles A. R. Thompson (b. Cincinnati, Ohio, 1825- d. Nashville, 1898), brother of George Torrence Thompson, was a wealthy Nashville merchant who built Edgehill Mansion. According to The Peabody Reflector Magazine (Vanderbilt University, Summer 2000), "Thompson and Company, located downtown on Fifth Avenue, was the citys most prominent merchant of silver, china, furs, wools, linens, and laces, as well as exquisite items such as ball gowns, bridal trousseaux, gloves, shawls, and parasols. For most of the 19th century, century and until its closure in 1932, the store was a Nashville staple, serving as a social gathering place for the city's gentry". He married Kate Morton White, adopted daughter of John J. White, an attorney in Gallatin, TN. John Wood Dodge (American, 1807-1893) watercolor on paper oval half length portrait of a boy, about twelve years of age, with curly sandy hair and blue eyes, wearing a black suit and bow tie with white shirt. Original birdseye maple frame with gilt liner. Pencil and later pen inscription en verso, "John Black, son of Jas. and Mary Black painted by John W. Dodge July 1868 New York. 8 1/2" x 6 1/2", oval image 8" x 6"; frame 12" x 10". Biography (courtesy Who Was Who in American Art by Peter Falk): Originally from New York, John Wood Dodge worked as a portrait painter in Nashville from 1840-1861, painting the likenesses of many of the city's most prominent and wealthy citizens. Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay were among his portrait sitters. Among the places he traveled were Central Kentucky and New Orleans, Louisiana, where he exhibited in the Armory Hall a series of dioramas including View of New York City and Interior of St. Peter's Church of Rome. In 1849, he moved to Huntsville, Alabama, but by 1862 he was back in New York City, where he became a member of the National Academy and remained for many years. In gold oval frame with engine-turned decoration to back and original velvet lined leather case. 2-3/4" x 2-1/4". Originally from New York, John Wood Dodge worked as a portrait painter in Nashville from 1840-1861, painting the likenesses of many of the city's most prominent and wealthy citizens. His account book, which survives for the years 1828-1854, lists "Mrs. Baker" as one of his earliest Nashville subjects. A copy of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, Spring 2000, which contains an article by Raymond White about John Wood Dodge and lists "Mrs. Baker" among his subjects, accompanies this lot. Provenance: Private Middle Tennessee collection.

Miniature painted portrait on paper of a Southern gentleman by John Wood Dodge (1807-1893, working in Nashville, 1840-1861). Frame case contains card with C.C. Giers Studio label (located in Nashville, TN). Portrait depicts a bearded gentleman attired in black coat and black tie on brown background. Housed in gold frame case that can be worn as a pendant or as a pin. Script en verso of portrait reads "Painted by John W. Dodge, Nashville, Tenn, July 1857, Likeness of Geo. T. Tomp--." Very good condition with slight browning visible on shirt. 2 3/4" H x 2 1/4" W. A portrait miniature artist and dioramist, John Wood Dodge was born in New York City and was a member of the National Academy. In 1839, suffering ill health and possibly seeking an area with fewer competitors, he moved to Southern states and lived as an itinerant portraitist, basing himself in Nashville. From 1840 until 1861, he painted the likenesses of many of the region's most prominent citizens, including Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay. By 1857, Dodge was still painting portraits on ivory but also coloring over photographs, as photography became a greater influence in the field of portraiture. However, examination of this particular painting under high power magnification indicates, in our opinion, that it is executed entirely in watercolor on paper. A similar Dodge portrait miniature on paper of John Harding is in the collection of the Tennessee State Museum. The sitter's identity has not been determined. Dodge's account books do not contain the year 1857. However, 1860 census records show a well-to-do land owner named George T. Thompson, age 43, living in Nashville with his wife, Martha Trabue Thompson, and family.
