      • Battista Dossi (Battista Luteri; Battista di Niccolò di Lutero) The Flight into Egypt
        Jun. 26, 2024

Battista Dossi (Battista Luteri; Battista di Niccolò di Lutero) The Flight into Egypt

        Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Battista Dossi (Battista Luteri; Battista di Niccolò di Lutero) um 1500 - 1548 Ferrara The Flight into Egypt Oil auf poplar wood. 66.1 x 87.3 cm. Restored. Minor damage to frame. Wax seal of a cardinal from the House of Medici. - Ibid. heavily damaged adhesive label with wax seal "N" under the circlet of the crown. The present composition is known in three versions. One has been in the collection of Samuel H. Kress and was donated to the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, Florida. This smaller version, also painted on panel, is comparable to the present painting in every detail. The third version was formerly in the collection of Fritz von Harck (1855-1917) at Seußlitz castle, Dresden. The Harck version differs mainly concerning the right part of the painting. In 1995 Ballarin published a drawing of Mary and Joseph on the donkeys kept at the Musée du Louvre, Paris (see below, cat. no. 462), which is related to the painting and is attributed to Battista Dossi. In literature the three versions of the Flight into Egypt are alternately attributed to either Dosso or Battista Dossi or are seen as a work of both. Battista Dossis authorship is evidenced by the very special design of the landscape in the background, which has become Battistas trademark. This is clearly influenced by the landscape formations of Joachim Patinir and his circle and was discussed in detail by Peter Humfrey (cf. Dosso Dossi. Pittore di corte a Ferrara nel Rinascimento. Ferrara, Civiche Gallerie dArte Moderna e Contemporanea di Ferrara, 26 September - 14 December 1998. Ferrara 1998, p. 255, cat. no. 52 : Battista DossisThe Stoning of St. Stephen, Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, Madrid). In the estates inventory of Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763-1839) can be traced a painting, whose description could apply to the present work: With no. 4341 there is mentioned a work by an Anonyme ferrarais, depicting Le Repos pendant la Fuite en Égypte (oil on panel, 67 x 89 cm). In the sales catalogues of objects from Feschs estate, which took place between 1843 and 1845, the painting could not be identified. Joseph Fesch was the half-brother of Letizia Ramolino Bonaparte (1750-1836), the mother of Napoléon Bonaparte. At his death his large art collection contained about 16.000 works of art, which made it probably the largest private collection of that time. Literature: Mendelsohn Henriette, Das Werk der Dossi. Munich 1914, p. 135 (as a copy of the Harck version). - Gibbons, Felton, Dosso and Battista Dossi - Court Painters at Ferrara. Princeton 1968, p. 237: Mentioned at cat. no. 120 (as a copy of the Kress version). - Ugolino, Andrea, Rivendendo la collezione Costabili die Ferrara, in: Paragone, no. 24 (489), November 1990, p. 59, no. L.110 (as a further version of the Harck version). - Ballarin, Alessandro, Dosso Dossi. La Pittura a Ferrara negli anni del Ducato de Alfonso I. Cittadella 1995, vol. 1, p. 352 f., cat. no. 455 (attributed to Battista Dossi). Ib. mentioned at cat.-no. 463 and p. 477 (with fig. 188). - Colby, Robert, Dossos early artistic reputation and the origins of landscape painting, in: Papers of the British School at Rome, vol. LXXVI. London 2008, p. 205, fig. p. 359, plate 5 (as Dosso Dossi and Battista Dossi [?]). Provenance: probably collection of Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763-1839), Rome. - Collection of Sterbini, Rome. - Sothebys Florence, auction 21 October 1970, catalogue number 16 (as Battista Dossi). - Private collection. We thank Matteo Gianeselli, Écouen, and Dr. Philippe Costamagna, Ajaccio, for their kind support with the research. Both are researching the history of the collection of Fesch as part of an INHA project, Paris.

DAS URTEIL DES PARIS Öl auf Holz. 68 x 75,5 cm. (1042081) (13) Battista de Luteri Dossi, ca. 1474 - 1548, workshop of (following pages) THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS Oil on panel. 68 x 75.5 cm. Ferrara, ca. 1540. The present panel depicting the Judgment of Paris, reprises the idea developed in an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi, who had himself based it on a now lost drawing by Raphael. The panel has probably been cut along the top and right; with some retouching. Provenance: Private collection, Berlin. Prince of Lippe, who acquired the painting in the 1980s in Bremen. Exhibition: Turin, Venaria Reale, Raffaello. Il Sole delle Arti, 26 September 2015 - 24 January 2016. Literature: Exhibition catalogue, Raffaello. Il sole delle arti, 2015, p. 305, cat. no. 108, illustrated. Comparable examples: Cuzin dates a similar painting is held in a French private collection ca. 1540 (Cuzin, 1983, p. 49). Notes: Prof Dr Ulrike Müller-Hofstede, Berlin, distinguishes those involved in the creation of the painting as follows: the central figures are attributed to the master himself, but she ascribes the outer figures to a student because of their physiognomy. The signature, however, is further evidence of Dossi’s hand.

The brothers collaborated on a number of works such as the frescoes in the Villa Imperiale, Pesaro and on the frescoes in the Trent Castle. Dossi's addition of a book in this composition, the book of Wisdom, distinguishes this work as a Mater Sapientiae, or Mother of Wisdom.

Ballarin, Dosso Dossi, la Pittura a Ferrara negli anni del Ducato de Alfonso I, Cittadella, 1995, I, p. 365, no. 491, and fig. 229. NOTES First certainly recorded in 1864 as by Peruzzi - whose authorship of the cartoon of the subject, formerly in the National Gallery but now in the British Museum, was widely known at the time - the picture has been unanimously accepted as by Battista Dossi since Phillips' 1915 publication. Phillips regarded it as an early work, possibly the earliest known, and suggested the intervention of Battista's brother Dosso in the architecture: 'a distinction' which to Borenius did 'not seem quite convincing', and has found no subsequent support. Mezzetti regarded the panel as a mature work, while Gibbons favoured a date soon after 1510, that is at the outset of the artist's career. Ballarin's dating is circa 1535 (text) and circa 1539-40 (caption to plate), and there are indeed evident similarities with, for example, a small picture in the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo (no. 725, Gibbons, no. 494, fig. 230), for which a similar chronology is proposed. There was evidently a considerable demand in Ferrara for small, finely finished devotional panels of the kind. While Battista's overriding debt is inevitably to Dosso, this panel should be seen as an example of his working in competition with such rivals as Garofalo and Girolamo da Carpi who were both particularly successful in compositions of this type and scale.
