Wyatt Eaton (American, 1849-1896) Portrait of Mrs. Richard Watson Gilder (Helena de Kay), circa 1885-89 Oil on canvas 36 x 28 inches (91.4 x 71.1 cm) EXHIBITED: Palais des Beaux-Arts, "Exposition Universelle de 1889," Paris, no. 102; Toronto Art Museum, "Fourth Loan Exhibition: Paintings by Deceased Canadian Artists," January 1911, no. 19; Beacon Hill Fine Art, New York, "American Painters on the French Scene: 1874-1914," April 23-July 12, 1996. LITERATURE: G.S. Hellman, "Wyatt Eaton," The Art World, vol. 3, December 1917, pp. 204, 207, illustrated; A. Blaugrund, ed., The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Paris 1889: American Artists at the Universal Exposition, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1990, pp. 150, 276, illustrated; L.M. Fink, American Art of the Nineteenth-Century Paris Salons, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1990, p. 307, no. 4; D. Sellin and D. Force, American Painters on the French Scene: 1874-1914, exhibition catalog, New York, 1996, p. 2, illustrated. Wyatt Eaton, draftsman, painter, and writer, was born in Philipsburg, Canada in 1849. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York between 1867 and 1872 under famed painters Samuel Colman and Daniel Huntington. Upon completion of his studies in America, Eaton left for France where, between 1872 and 1876, he studied under Jean-Leon Gerome at the École des Beaux-Arts; he also drew inspiration from Jean-Francois Millet, whom he met through the Boston expatriate artist William Babcock. One critic noted that Eaton's style "falls somewhere between the academicism of artists like (Alexandre) Cabanel and the efforts of avant-garde artists unable to abandon this enduring artistic motif." Following his return from France, Eaton was among the young European trained painters who, in 1877, formed the Society of American Artists with William Merritt Chase, Albert Pinkham Ryder, and Augustus Saint Gaudens, in reaction to the discriminatory practices of the National Academy of Design. The founding group also included Helena de Kay, whose portrait was one of the three that Eaton exhibited at the Paris Exposition in 1889. Eaton's friendship with de Kay and her husband, Richard Watson Gilder, editor of Century magazine, is reflected in the artist's close association with that magazine. In 1889, for example, it published Eaton's Barbizon memoir, Recollections of Jean-Francois Millet. Earlier, the magazine had published Eaton's portrait series of well-known Americans, among them William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and John Greenleaf Whittier. According to the Gilder Palmer family, when Helena received the present work, she believed the composition lacked still life elements, and therefore she added the floral arrangement to the work. The painting itself is not the only artistic collaboration: The painting retains its original Stanford White frame, which was hand gilt by Helena. HID01801242017
