(Hüttenberg, Carinthia 1897–1934 Klagenfurt) Portrait of Signe Wallin (The wife of the artist), c. 1924–1931, signed Jean Egger, oil on canvas, 56 x 46 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Germany Compare: Matthias Boeckl, Jean Egger. 1897–1934, Kunstinitative Tirol, 2000, ill p. 78, 80 We are grateful to Dr. Matthias Boeckl for confirming the authenticity. In 1925, Jean Egger met Signe Wallin (1901–1991) from Sweden in Paris, where she ran a hat shop. She became not only his devoted companion but also his most important model. The intensity and versatility of his expressive painting style can be traced most consistently through this motif until his death in 1934. The portraits of Signe’s beautiful oval face, with her expressive eyes and straight nose, evoke the posture and melancholy expression found in Modigliani’s portraits of his beloved, Jeanne Hébuterne. In contrast, the agitated, gestural brushstroke inevitably brings Egger closer to Chaim Soutine. In this previously unknown portrait of his wife, the frontal composition and her attentive, scrutinizing gaze toward the viewer are particularly striking.

(Hüttenberg, Carinthia, 1897–1934 Klagenfurt) Blühender Mandelbaum auf Mallorca / Blooming Almond Tree on Mallorca, c. 1932/33, signed Jean Egger, oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm, framed Exhibited: Jean Egger, Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, 27 January – 7 May 2023 Compare: Matthias Boeckl, Jean Egger 1897–1934, Kunstinitiative Tirol, 2000, p. 203 and 207 Provenance: Private Collection, Paris Jean Egger (1897–1934) is one of the most important Austrian painters of the interwar period. His work was known only to specialists until his first retrospective at the Österreichische Galerie in 1995, curated by the author. Egger, as one of very few Austrians, found success and built his reputation in the then global capital of modern art, Paris, during his lifetime. Misunderstood and unknown in the Austrian art scene, he consolidated his reputation as one of the most gifted portraitists and landscape artists in the metropolis on the Seine between 1925 and 1932 at several salon exhibitions and a solo exhibition at the Galerie Sloden (1930). Egger spent the last years of his life on Mallorca with his partner Signe Wallin. Hardly any of his paintings reached the Austrian art market, and Egger slid into oblivion. ... Blurb from the aforementioned literature In June 1939, Otto Kallir-Nirenstein produced a retrospective of Jean Egger's work at his Galerie St. Etienne in Paris, which he had founded after his expulsion from Vienna.
