Artist: FRANZ EHRLICH (1907-1984) Size: 5 3/4 x 11 7/8 in./14.8 x 30 cm Based on typographic renderings by Joost Schmidt, this is the original invitation to the 1930 Bauhaus Carnival, where you/he/she/it/we/you/they are invited to come aboard an elevator ride to the future. Featuring all manner of wild entertainment, the party was meant to be one of the highlights of the season. It would, however, mark a turning point in the school's tense relationship with the local government, as the leftwing students' singing of Communist songs during the event would insight the conservative press to report harshly on the institution, resulting the the explusion of nearly 30 students and faculty.

The table is crafted of solid and veneered Sen ash, a material that is today mainly used in its country of origin, Japan. The bright wood with the regular grain that is especially well visible on the tabletop is of high decorative effect, but without the especially luxurious and exquisite touch of other finewoods like mahogany or rosewood, which are known from Art Deco. Such an effect would have objected the ideological spirit of Socialism. The tabletop is covered by a suiting pane. The table bears the original manufacturer's label with numerous indications about material, dimensions and others below the top. It is 64 cm in height and measures 130 x 605 cm. It is in good condition with little traces of age and use. The tabletop partly shows scratching marks. Watercolour "Bass Flower" by Franz Ehrlich, 1971

          Est: €800 - €1,000

Watercolour and pencil on paper Germany, 1971 Franz Ehrlich (1907 - 1984) - German architect and graphic artist of the Bauhaus Monogrammed and dated lower right, "Eh 71" Overall dimensions, framed: 48 x 36 cm Very good condition This beautiful watercolour of the Bauhaus artist Franz Ehrlich conforms, in its systematic and geometric structure, to the Bauhaus aesthetic that arose from the functionality and the requirements of the industry. The Bauhaus artists were 'masters of form' who also experimented with new concepts of colour, which is evident in Ehrlich's watercolour; it has a flower-shaped composition, arranged around three axes. Grey spikes of sorts, somewhat resembling the endpin of a double bass, are located on each axis, and each 'petal', too, picks up on the shape of the instrument. These 'petals' shine in varyingly intense shades of pink - some brighter, some darker - and are bound by a white border. An ebony sound hole with a glaring red outline is at the centre of this blossom-like composition. Red and black appear like the roots of the paler shades of pink and grey surrounding them and, due to their sudden intensity, they constitute a clear focal point of the arrangement. The dimensions of the sheet are 48 x 36 cm. The watercolour is monogrammed and dated lower right, "Eh 71". The work is in very good condition except for one small colour loss lower left and another on the upper margin, where traces of glue are also visible. The sheet margins display minimal blemishes and there is a tiny crease mark in the lower left corner. Franz Ehrlich (1907 - 1984) Franz Ehrlich grew up in Leipzig and studied - following a precedent apprenticeship as a machine fitter - at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he first completed a certification exam as a carpenter and later worked for Walter Gropius, from 1927 to 1930. Due to his communist disposition, he was charged with "preparation of high treason" by the Nazis and incarcerated in Zwickau prison and later in the concentration camp Buchenwald. The fact that he designed the front gate inscription, "JEDEM DAS SEINE" [to each their own, or figuratively: everyone gets what they deserve], in Buchenwald, is acrimonious without parallel. Between 1943 and 1945, he was a soldier in the Wehrmacht punishment unit 999 in Greece, and subsequently became a prisoner of war. In 1946, Ehrlich was able to return to Germany and became head of the department of reconstruction in Dresden. He was involved in many significant constructions in the post-war era and is held in esteem for being one of the few artists in the GDR who were able to preserve at least some autonomy in their use of forms. Bauhaus The Bauhaus was founded 1919 in Weimar by Walter Gropius under the slogan, "Bau der Zukunft [construction of the future]", as an art school that was meant to teach all arts unified with architecture into an ideal entity, or in Gropius' words, "to create a new guild of craftsmen, without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist." In 1925, the school moved to Dessau and began cooperating with the industry under the motto, "Art and Technology - a new unity". The first tubular steel furniture went into production, "Meisterhäuser [master houses]" designed by Gropius were built, and international attention was attained. After Gropius, Hannes Meyer and later Mies Van der Rohe were directors of the Bauhaus, which had to move to Berlin in 1932, only to be finally closed under Nazi pressure in 1933. Many of the former protagonists fled to the USA where they kept on spreading the ideas of the Bauhaus with great success.

          Est: €800 - €1,000

Brass, iron, copper, canvas, panel, acrylic Germany, 1928 Franz Ehrlich (1907-1984) - German architect and graphic artist of the Bauhaus Overall dimensions: 36 x 48 cm Very good condition This sculptural relief by the German Bauhaus artist Franz Ehrlich impresses due to its play with different forms and materials. The oval background is covered with beige fabric where different shapes meet different materials. They are arranged geometrically and form an enjoyable area of tension. The sculptural relief is in very good condition and only shows minor traces of age and wear. The frame is slighty chipped, especially at the lower parts. The brass area partially had been repatinated. The overall dimensions are 36 x 48 cm. Pastel drawing "Double Bass", by Franz Ehrlich, around 1970

          Est: €3,200 - €4,000

Pastel crayon, ink and pencil on paper Germany, around 1970 Franz Ehrlich (1907-1984) - German architect and graphic artist Bauhaus artist Monogrammed lower right, "Eh" In original frame Overall dimensions, framed: 72 x 57 cm Very good condition This pastel drawing of the Bauhaus artist Franz Ehrlich shows the vague outlines of a double bass inwardly diminishing in size. The drawing is divided in two halves by a black streak that takes the shape of an endpin on the lower end; the right half is composed of a bright orange tone, whereas the left is coloured in a deep shade of red. The corresponding halves of the bass match the side opposite from the one they occupy, and become darker towards the middle. At the centre of the drawing and the instrument is an f-hole filled out in black. The drawing, with its systematic, mirrored arrangement, conforms to the Bauhaus aesthetic that arose from the functionality and the requirements of the industry. The Bauhaus artists were 'masters of form', who also tried out new concepts of colour; in this drawing, Ehrlich combines colour and shape to a conclusive whole that repeatedly erupts, inviting to be viewed again and again. The drawing is in very good condition and is in the original frame that was also made by the artist. The hand-painted white frame shows minor traces of wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 72 x 57 cm, while the size of the sheet is 47.5 x 36 cm. The drawing is monogrammed lower right. The frame merely shows slight traces of wear.Franz Ehrlich (1907-1984) Franz Ehrlich grew up in Leipzig and studied - following a precedent apprenticeship as a machine fitter - at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he first completed a certification exam as a carpenter and later worked for Walter Gropius, from 1927 to 1930. He was involved in many significant constructions in the post-war era and is held in esteem for being one of the few artists in the GDR who were able to preserve at least some autonomy in their use of forms.Bauhaus The Bauhaus was founded 1919 in Weimar by Walter Gropius under the slogan, "Bau der Zukunft [construction of the future]", as an art school that was meant to teach all arts unified with architecture into an ideal entity, or in Gropius' words, "to create a new guild of craftsmen, without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist." In 1925, the school moved to Dessau and began cooperating with the industry under the motto, "Art and Technology - a new unity".

          Franz Ehrlich (1907-1984)

          Est: $14,600 - $21,900

Komposition signed and dated 'F. Ehrlich 1929' (on the reverse) oil on board 231/4 x 151/2in. (59 x 39.5cm.) Painted in 1929 NOTES Having studied at the Bauhaus, Franz Ehrlich was one of the students who would later exploit the entire breadth of the Bauhaus training. He worked as a graphic designer, as an exhibition designer and as an interior designer. He was involved in equipping new rooms when the Bauhaus moved to Dessau. The present painting not only reflects the Bauhaus philosophy of colour and form, but also makes a clear reference to Moholy-Nagy's personal interpretation of Bauhaus aesthetics and tonality.
