      Satake Eikai 佐竹永海 (1803-1874), Cockeral, ink and colour on silk, signed and with one seal of the artist, framed and glazed, picture size 115cm x 34cmProvenance:From a private collection in the West Midlands.Born to a family of lacquerers in Wakamatsu, Mutsu Province, Satake Eikai started his studies under a local artist before travelling to Edo, becoming chief pupil of Tani Bunchō. From 1838 he served as a retainer of the Li Family, Lords of Hikone, rising to the honorary rank of Hōgen and continuing his association even after the assassination of Ii Naosuke in 1860.
