FRÖHLICH SPIELENDE KINDER Öl auf Leinwand. 46 x 37 cm. Links unten signiert „Foes Eisen“ und datiert „1771“. Verso auf Holzrahmen erneut bezeichnet und datiert. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. Auf einer Lichtung in einer Waldlandschaft auf einem störrischen Esel sitzend ein kleiner Junge in zweifarbigem Narrenkostüm, mit erhobenen Händen auf eine vor ihm befestigte kleine Trommel schlagend. Ein weiterer Junge versucht vergeblich an einer Leine den Esel zum Bewegen zu bringen, während hinter dem Esel zwei Mädchen versuchen, ihn mit Stöcken anzutreiben. Im Hintergrund weitere Kinder, teils auf einem Horn spielend, und im Vordergrund ein Junge und ein Mädchen im Gras sitzend, sich das heitere Treiben anschauend. Wiedergabe der spielenden Kinder in zurückhaltender Farbgebung, in der typischen einfühlsamen Manier des Künstlers. (13511211) (18)

Engraving on laid paper depicting a female magician on whose table the Cups and Balls are set up, with an old crone pickpocket in the shadows, relieving the conjurer’s consort of his handkerchief. Lines of verse below title. Trimmed to 15 ⅞ x 12”. Near fine. See Nevill, French Prints of the Eighteenth Century (1908), p. 136, and Exemplars, p. 213. Eisen, a famous Flemish genre painter, created a number of paintings focusing on love, beauty and deception. This image was engraved from Eisen’s original by Angelique Martinet (French, ca. 1731 1780). The verses below the image here deal with magic and coquetry.

François Eisen (1695–1778) Two Kids are Playing with a Dog

François Eisen, born in Brussels, was a student of Pierre Rogier in Valenciennes and became a master there in 1716. From 1732 to 1745 he lived again in Brussels and from 1745 in Paris, where he died. The protagonists of this charming genre scene are two children dressed in courtly, French fashion. The girl is playing with a dog dressed in a harlequin costume. The boy watching is playing on a hurdy-gurdy. Following the example of Dutch paintings, the scene is placed in a painted stone window frame.

Eisen h: 46 w: 55,50 cm Provenance : Vente anonyme ; Versailles, Mes Perrin, Royère, Lajeunesse, 19 novembre 1989, n° 30 (comme Schenau) ; Collection particulière, Belgique Commentaire : Ce petit tableau illustre une fable du livre V des Fables de Jean de La Fontaine. Deux jeunes servantes y sont constamment pressées par la vieille femme qui les emploie et les fait travailler sans relâche à divers travaux de tissage. Afin de gagner un peu de sommeil, elles se décident à tuer le coq et mettent leur plan à exécution : " Comme elles l''avaient dit, la bête fut grippée; Le réveille-matin eut la gorge coupée . ". C''est l''épisode que le peintre a ici choisi de représenter : les deux servantes se sont emparées du coq et s''apprêtent à l''égorger, tandis que l''on distingue la vieille à l''arrière-plan. Ce meurtre ne leur apporta pas de répit pour autant car leur maîtresse endossa le rôle de l''animal, venant les réveiller à peine endormies et les faisant " tomber par là de Charybde en Scylla ".

It was here that Eisen embarked on numerous commissions for the churches and monastic instituions of the region. In 1745 Eisen moved to Paris, where he stayed until his death.[1] We have been unable to find any historical references to a known self-portrait by the artist, but it would appear to be without too much doubt that the present work is a self-portrait, and one of the artist in his studio. The studio is filled with fine examples of contemporary furniture, historical curios, and the objects of a collector one would presume to have been exposed to the cultural legacy of classical antiquity; while we have been unable to confirm whether Eisen travelled to Italy, the influence and interests common among many 18th century Grand Tourists is clearly apparent.
