    Mid-Edo Period (Late 18th/Early 19th Century) Each of butterfly outline, decorated in red and green enamels with ho-o birds in Chinese Swatow-ware style, with inscribed wood box Each 23/4 x 4 13/16in. (7 x 12.2cm.) (5) NOTES Born in Kyoto the son of a rich merchant, Okuda Eisen opened a kiln in Awata where he specialised in enamel-decorated wares as well as imitations of ko-sometsuke [early blue and white] and Kochi wares. His pupils included such celebrated late-Edo potters as Aoki Mokubei and Nin'ami Dohachi.
