Ink, tempera, and linseed oil on tissue paper. Jambo Means Hello is an abecedarium of Swahili terms for the 24 letters in the Swahili alphabet. It won the 1974 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Picture Book and was awarded a Caldecott Honor in 1975. The illustrations, double-page spreads, create a picture of village life in East Africa, where Swahili is the language of 45 million people. br /> Caption from the book: "Beauty means different things in different parts of Africa. Tom Feelings 1933-2003 Untitled Watercolor and ink on wove paper 1964 signed, dated, and inscribed Senegal, West Africa. Tom Feelings, a native of Brooklyn, New York, attended the school of Visual Arts for two years and then joined the Air Force in 1953, working in London as a staff artist for the Graphics Division of the Third Air Force. In 1958, he created a weekly comic strip, Tommy Traveler in the World of Negro History, which ran in The New York Age, a Harlem-based newspaper. Feelings traveled to Ghana and Guyana early in his career, and spent his time in both countries illustrating, teaching, and consulting. When he returned from his first trip to Africa, he began illustrating books with African and African-American themes. To Be a Slave, a non-fiction childrenâ€™s book written by Julius Lester and illustrated by Feelings, was chosen as the 1969 Newberry Honor Book. It was the first book of its kind to receive such an award. He illustrated twenty books in his career. The School of Visual Arts recognized Feelings with its Outstanding Achievement Award in 1974. He has received eight Certificates of Merit from The Society of Illustrators, along with a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Grant in 1982. Feelings produced primarily drawings or understated watercolors of figurative subjects. While in Africa, he worked for Africa Review, established in 1971 as a journal discussing African politics, development and international affairs. When in the United States, Feelings exhibited at the Brooklyn Fulton Art Fair; Atlanta University; Morgan State College; Park Village Gallery, (solo); and the Market Place Gallery, NYC. 12 x 10 inches

Illustrated: Feelings, Muriel L. and Tom Feelings, Moja Means One: Swahili Counting Book, p. 3. This picture book by Tom and Muriel Feelings was a 1972 Caldecott Medal winner. Mankala (oware) is a popular bead game across West Africa, including Ghana, where Tom Feelings and Maya Angelou met in the early 1960s. Tom Feelings, well known artist and illustrator, was born in Brooklyn, New York. Feelings attended the School of Visual Arts in 1957 after serving in the Air Force where he worked in London as a staff artist for the Graphics Division. In 1962, he had his first commercial success when his drawings of the South were published in Look magazine. In 1964, Feelings traveled to Ghana, where he spent two years working for the Ghanaian government magazine, The African Review, teaching illustration, and serving as an art consultant for the government publishing house. In 1966, he returned to the United States to concentrate on illustrating books with African and African-American themes. Feelings received numerous awards for his illustrations including the Newberry Award in 1969, the Caldecott in 1972, the Coretta Scott King Award in 1979, 1994 and 1996 and a nomination for the American Book Award in 1982. From 1971 to 1974, Feelings lived in Guyana, South America, working as a teacher and consultant for the Ministry of Education, training young artists in textbook illustration. He received a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Grant in 1982. He was an artist-in-residence at the University of South Carolina from 1990 to 1995.
