From 1870 to around 1895 he was the most prominent landscape illustrator in the United States. He is also noted for his illustrations of Egypt, Palestine and the Sinai.

Illustration for the article Glimpses of the Everglades by William Hosea Ballou, published in Harper's Weekly, March 12, 1887, volume 31, issue 1577. Ink, wash, and gouache on paper, mounted to board. 420x305 mm; 10 1/2x12 inches. Signed by Fenn in ink, lower left, captioned in pencil in margin below image. The article discusses one of the earliest and most complete expeditions to the Florida Everglades by Major A. P. Williams and his crew, including artist Harry Fenn, who drew these from life. The trip, during which several rivers were discovered and several islands named, was arranged by Major Edward A. Burke, then-owner of the New Orleans Times-Democrat and the notes and drawings were put together for him by author Wolf Harlander.

The valley was named after the Old Testament figure Jethro, Moses' father-in-law. The valley is impressively inscribed in the striking rocks, a small village can be seen in the middle ground in the otherwise deserted valley. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Jordan, Size: 30,8 cm x 23,4 cm (12,1 x 9,2 in), Depiction: 25,5 cm x 16,4 cm (10 x 6,5 in) Condition: Good condition. Isolated small foxing spots. Water stain in the area of the lower and right margin. The image is not affected by this.

In an off-white mat with a gold leaf frame and glazed. Harry Fenn was born in England and when he came to America he became part of the Hudson River School painters and was an illustrator for William Cullen Bryant's book Picturesque America. He was also a founder of the American Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club and the Society of Illustrators. MEASUREMENTS: 7-3/4" x 13-1/2". Overall with frame 15-1/2" x 20-1/2". CONDITION: Foxing on the mat and with minor foxing in the upper portion of the image.
