Marcelle Ferron was born in Louiseville, Quebec, in 1924 and died in Montreal in 2001. One of the most important Quebec artists of the 20th century, she was known as a painter, sculptor and stained glass artist. Marcelle Ferron enrolled at the École des beaux-arts de Québec (1942-1944) but dropped out before completing her studies. In 1946, she met Paul-Émile Borduas and enrolled at the École du Meuble in Montreal, where he taught. She was one of the last artists to officially join the group known as Les Automatistes. She was also one of the youngest signatories of the group's global manifesto Refus in 1948. She held her first solo exhibition in 1949 at Librairie Tranquille in Montreal. That year, she began to gain considerable recognition in the art world. Around 1953, Marcelle Ferron moved to France. There she rented a house in Clamart, a suburb of Paris, and set up her studio. Europeans appreciated her abstract works, full of light and life. During his stay, he took classes in Paris with Michel Blum (1964), a glass artist. She received a grant from the Canadian Council of Arts in 1957, an award from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1960 and in 1961, she represented Quebec at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil and won a Silver Medal, the first time a woman from Quebec had won this award. She was an internationally recognised artist who returned to Quebec in 1966. She devoted herself to working with glass for the next seven years. She created her first masterpiece in this medium, the windows of the Champs-de-Mars metro station in Montreal. In 1967, he began teaching at Université Laval in Quebec City. She taught Architecture from 1967 to 1970 and then Visual Arts from 1970 to 1979. During those years, she was elected Member of the Royal Canadian Academy. Early member of Le Refus Global and former signatory member of the Automatist Movement, Marcelle Ferron, Borduas’ student, is a figure in Quebec Art. She lived in Paris from 1953 to 1964, this is a prolific period for Ferron as she achieves artistic maturity in her painting. She also paints her most sought after works at that time and this particular piece from 1963 is a striking example. The power and purity of the lines in conjunction with the distinctive palette make this oil a pièce de choix for any abstract art collection.

Borduas had become her mentor after Ferron left the École des beaux-arts in Québec City, disagreeing with the institution’s attitude to modern art. She moved to Montréal and became a supporter of the automatiste movement, its art and politics, in the 1940s. Colour and light are two distinguishing features of Ferron’s painting; and it was natural that she would be drawn to the art of stained glass during her career.Like many Québécois artists of the period, Ferron spent many productive years in Paris (1953-1966). She became an artist of note, exhibiting in Paris and throughout Europe. Almost immediately upon arrival in Paris, her technique changed considerably. In contrast to the somber palette she had used previously, Ferron began using vivid colours and white, applying the paint in thick multi-directional swaths. One reason for this sudden change was her acquisition of colour pigments from a generous patron, which she ground herself using poppy oil (a light-coloured medium well-suited to whites). It was important to Ferron that the brilliancy of the whites be maintained; if any white area of a work in her possession became dirty or yellowed with time, she would simply apply a fresh coat of paint. This untitled work is a good example of her technique from the beginning of the 1960s. Ferron would begin by first establishing the composition by applying the paint with large palette knives using broad, free strokes. The artist allowed layers of paint to build up, or blend together, after which she would refine the formal elements of the piece with brushes or smaller knives to create a satisfying aesthetic result. Movement is created by the interplay of colours and light: white areas surround and penetrate the bands of colour, permeating the painting with light. Ferron considered that her most accomplished paintings were those she had made in Europe. Estimate: $45,000–60,000

Ferron, who had studied under Borduas, had developed a close professional relationship with him. Certainly, a sympathy between these artists can be detected in this lot which has in common with the senior artist's work both palette and technique. Perhaps one could even consider this lot an hommage; Borduas died on February 22, 1960, at the age of fifty-four.At this time, Ferron's reputation was well-established and she was exhibiting regularly in Europe, and in Canada at Galerie Denyse Delrue.Estimate: $10,000–15,000

Yet Ferron herself would have rejected these descriptors for much of her work, particularly works from this period. In fact, works such as this lot carry a different tone entirely - focusing not on power, but on a kind of enduring luminosity. An avid risk taker, Ferron was an artist forever eager to explore the unexpected. According to family members, “she forced herself to paint in very tall format because it was difficult and represented a challenge” given certain physical limitations. When Ferron returned to painting after spending several years working with glass, art historian Réal Lussier said, “she had not lost her fire.” In La Rousse (No. 52), Ferron creates a maelstrom of black and fiery oranges which emanate from an almost liquid surface. One can wonder if Lussier wasn’t actually looking at La Rousse (No. 52) when he made his statement. While Ferron’s gestural compositions often appear as though they might spill out beyond the confines of the canvas, La Rousse (No. 52) resists an existence beyond its borders. Rather, it is an invitation to enter, a door to open.In a documentary produced by Monique Crouillère in 1989, Ferron is asked how she knows when a painting is finished. Ferron replies that she is not the one who decides when a painting is done. She describes herself as the painting’s slave. Paintings, she contends, know how to defend themselves.Ferron also emphasizes the importance of the relationship between lines and masses. It is this balance which, to her, is the most fragile, and also the most important, aspect of her paintings. A few drops of paint can hold a work together. While creating these tall, vertical compositions, Ferron was inspired by symbolic beings. These so-called “bonnes femmes” served to guide her on her quest to find her identity as a woman and as an artist. Among her many achievements, Ferron was the first woman to receive the Paul Émile Borduas Prize in 1983. Two years later, she was made Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec by the Quebec government. In 2000, the same year Marcelle Ferron: une retrospective was presented at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, she was given the title of Grand officier de l’Ordre national du Québec.

In this particular composition, an abundance of golden ochre sets the stage for twists and garnishes of brilliant, pure colour. Winsor green, rose, violet and a trace of ultramarine, exemplify the passionate emotions of urgency and euphoria.
