FOUR PHOTO-COLLAGES FROM THE PROJECT PILA [SAW], EDITION 3/5 40 by 60cm, 15¾ by 23½in. Executed in 2006 Quantity: 4 NOTE Andrei Filippov conceived his project SAW in the late 1980s, at the time of the collapse of the Berlin Wall, however it remained unrealised until 2006. The underlying idea was to create a work that would reflect the artist's thoughts on the opposition between the West and the East, which he sees as rooted in the history of the Roman Empire, itself brought down by the split of Christianity into Eastern Orthodoxy and Western Catholicism. Filippov created a giant sculpture in the form of a saw, which, like the hand of fate, cuts through the earth's surface and represents 'an image of unappeasable fate inflicting humanity with mortal wounds, like geological faults' (Ekaterina Degot: 2000). In terms of the visual concept, the artist draws analogies between the teeth of the saw and the jagged outline of the Moscow Kremlin wall.

        m - ANDREI FILIPPOV, B.1959

        Est: £15,000 - £25,000

[WEST] [WEST] 40.5 by 50.5cm., 16 by 20in. oil on canvas board NOTE Andrei Filippov studied in the production department of the Moscow Art Theatre and early-on defined his personal artistic style as monumental, iconic and almost propaganda-like, elements of which can bee seen in the offered lot. An active participant in exhibitions of AptArt, Filippov eventually became one of the leaders of the new generation of the Moscow Conceptualist school. Filippov's interest in ruptured cultures and civilizations and the opposition between West and East is reflected in his art and many of his works can be considered prophetic. The offered lot demonstrates this foresight in the use of two-headed eagles to spell the word West in Cyrillic. This common motif, as characteristic of his work including the saw-like contours of the Kremlin wall (lot 79) was used by Filippov in his paintings and installations long before it was reincorporated as the new Russia's national emblem.
