  • Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540) - Caritas Romana - 1542
    Mar. 03, 2022

    Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540) - Caritas Romana - 1542

    Est: €800 - €1,600

Caritas Romanas: Pero visiting her father in jail and nourishing him at her own breast. 1542 engraving after Rosso Fiorentino's stucco relief in the Galerie François I, Fontainebleau; as the plate differs from the relief it is likely that the engraver used a lost drawing as a model. See 'École de Fontainebleau', Paris 1972, cat. No.440 and 'Rosso Fiorentino', Washington 1987, cat.81. The authorship of this engraving is disputed. While Bartsch attributes the work to Gaspar Reverdino, Zerner points out the stylistic resemblance to Domenico del Barbiere. The final attribution by Massari to Giulio Bonasone is also not convincing. This is a third state with the publishers address of Salamanca. The work is dated 1542 and one of the earliest prints after the decorations of Fontainebleau.
