        This unframed print measures 24" x 20" is titled "The Outer Picket Line, Winter" 33 out of 40. It is signed in the lower left corner, "E. Forbes." This is an original engraving from his portfolio. The scene depicted is a general view overlooking the enemy's country. Edwin Forbes (1839-1895) was an American landscape painter and etcher, best known for his Life Studies of the Great Army. He was born in New York City to Joseph C. and Ann Forbes. At the age of eighteen he began his study of art and by the age of twenty became a pupil of Arthur F. Tait. His early work involved painting animals but he later expanded to genre scenes and landscapes. In 1861 he was hired as a staff artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper where he covered the Army of the Potomac from 1862 to 1864. With his primary interest being that of recording the everyday activities of soldiers, Forbes would making quick sketches on the battlefield and later refine them with great detail. The sketches were sent back to New York where copper plate etchings were made from the detailed drawings. His drawings were published in Leslie's newspaper and in 1876, Forbes made etchings of his own illustrations and published them in portfolio form on better quality paper as Life Studies of the Great Army: A Historical Art Work in Copper Plate Etching Containing Forty Plates. His work, considered to be the finest drawings of the Civil War, is now preserved in the War Office at Washington D.C. because of the historic significance and value. Less than 200 of these superb large size etchings were ever made. His Life Studies of the Great Army would go on to receive an award at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. After his death the Library of Congress acquired Forbes originals through a gift of John Pierpont Morgan in 1919. They included about 300 drawings as well as forty-three etched plates and the original impressions used in Life Studies of the Great Army. Every few etchings housed in publisher’s paper portfolios with hand-written numbers (all paper portfolios are present, numbered 1 to 10; portfolios are toned and worn). The entire collection housed in the original publisher’s full brown cloth portfolio, front board stamped in gilt with silk ties (front board detached, binding worn, soiled, sunned, most silk ties lacking). Still, an excellent collection, with the etchings generally bright.

        JOHN EDWIN FORBES (1839-1895) Study of sharpshooters in a bunker. Likely for Leslie's Illustrated" newspaper. Graphite on light blue-green paper. 176X228 mm; 7x9 inches, sheet. Initialed and dated "E.F. `66." in lower left image. Framed. Forbes was 22 when he joined the staff of Leslie's in 1861 as a reportorial artist, covering the course of the Civil War. After the war, he created a series of detailed etchings, which he published in 1891 as Thirty Years After: An Artist's Story of the Great War. This sketch, created a year after the Civil War ended, may have been a study for one of those works.

A group of 40 etchings, each approx. 24 x 19 in., from numbered series (1-40) Life Studies of the Great Army (loose as issued, some with spotting, soiling, and staining to margins, chipping). Each etching with 1876 copyright date, plate number, and title printed in the lower margin. Housed in original publisher's cloth gilt portfolio (evidence of dampstaining, wear to extremities). A fine group of etchings documenting soldier and civilian life during the Civil War, many including African American subjects. During the Civil War, New York City native Edwin Forbes became a reportorial artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, joining the staff at age 22 in 1861. He was attached to the Army of the Potomac and was one of the youngest and one of the few artists who covered the entire war. He used many of his pencil sketches for large paintings after the war and from them, produced a series of detailed etchings, which were published in Life Studies of the Great Army in 1876. Partial group of 30 etchings. 1876.   A group of 30 (out of 40) etchings, each approx. 24 x 19 in., from numbered series (1-40) Life Studies of the Great Army, including plate numbers 1-2, 4-9, 12-18, 20, 23-25, 28-36, 38, and 40 (each housed under archival mat, many in very good to near excellent condition, some with spotting, soiling, and staining to margins). Each etching with 1876 copyright date, plate number, and title printed in the lower margin. A fine group of etchings documenting soldier and civilian life during the Civil War, including camp and battlefield scenes. [With:] 3 additional etchings by Forbes, including 2 examples, 21 1/4 x 16 1/4 in., with 1876 copyright date and title in lower margin as well as applied paper label with information about the plate. Third etching, 16 x 10 in., appears to have been trimmed down from another publication and mounted to thin cardstock with newspaper backing, with 1876 copyright date and title in lower margin (corner/edge wear and loss to etching). -- 3 illustrated pages (1 full page and 2 partial) removed from 1868 and 1877 issues of Harper's Weekly. Born in New York City, Edwin Forbes was a student of Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait and began his career as a painter of animals and landscapes. During the Civil War, he became a reportorial artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, joining the staff at age 22 in 1861. He was attached to the Army of the Potomac and was one of the youngest and one of the few artists who covered the entire war. Most of his illustrations documented the daily life of the soldiers, but he also depicted battle scenes including the Second Battle of Bull Run and Hooker's Charge at Antietam. He used many of his pencil sketches for large paintings after the war and from them, produced a series of detailed etchings, which were published in Life Studies of the Great Army in 1876. This series earned Forbes a gold medal at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

        [Life Studies of the Great Army. New York: 1876.] 40 etched plates, 480 x 605 mm (sheet size). Original cloth cover of portfolio present with printed contents on verso. Some edge chipping and occasional stains affecting margins only, two plates very browned, sold as a collection of plates. Important series of large etchings from one of the foremost illustrators of the Civil War. Forbes reported for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in direct competition with Winslow Homer at Harper's. Present also are two later prints on japan paper signed by Mrs Edwin Forbes.

Oil on canvas Civil War scene shows a wagon train with the lead covered wagon filled with crates being lead by three teams of two horses having two black drivers accompanied by a soldier on horseback. Several other wagons are seen behind. All along a wide dirt road with high grass banks under a blue and cloud sky. Signed lower left. From 1861-65 Frobes was a staff artist Frank Leslie's Illustrated newspaper, covering the Army of the Potomac throughout the war. Housed in a gilt wood frame with linen and gold liner.
