By artist A.E. Foringer (American, 1878-1948). This was for Christmas fundraising campaign. US WWI Lithographs were used during 1917-1920 to encourage citizens to buy Liberty Bonds, special charitable appeals, conserve food and goods and enforce patriotism. Since the federal government had banned commercial radio, the posters were needed to spread these messages. Many of the works were commissioned by well-known artists of the day. THE GREATEST MOTHER ORIGINAL VINTAGE WWI RED CROSS POSTER BY FORINGER

        Est: $500 - $750

The Greatest Mother in the World is a 1918 World War I U.S.A propaganda advertisement by Alonzo Earl Foringer. It is one of the best known of all Red Cross posters. The composition draws heavy influence from Michelangelo's Pieta sculpture in the Vatican. The sculpture relates the Madonna as "Mother Church" and her protecting care of humanity. In Foringer's rendition, the Red Cross Nurse evokes the figure of the Madonna, who cares for the American soldier. The piece's traditional tonal illustration give a sense of great sympathy and also provides a point of contrast for the vibrant Red Cross symbol. Foringer was an accomplished muralist whose paintings grace numerous United States government buildings and courthouses, including the dome of the Wisconsin State Capital. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
