Originally from France, Paul Frenzeny is best known for his illustration work featured in Harper's Weekly during the period of 1869 and 1878. Commissioned by Harper's in 1868 to travel across America, Frenzeny along with Jules Tavernier recorded the landscape and peoples of remote and relatively unexplored areas of the Western and Southwestern United States. Later published work for Harper's featured scenes of California, Nevada, and Central America. In 1894 Frenzeny provided a number of the original illustrations for the first edition publication of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. The panels on this screen relate to another set of four smaller panels dated 1891 and also mounted in an oak screen.
